(STEEL & REJ;'liFORCED CONCRETE DESIG~1

BSc (Civil Engineering)

Time Allowed : 3 Hours

TotaJ Marks : 100

Instructions

• Thi~ is an Open book exam (Lecture notes and course band-outs are permitted).
• No programmable ca]cu]ators, laptops, iPads etc. are permitted.
• Attempt ALL questions. Clearly show a11 calculations including applicable design
standard references. Correct working will attract some marks.
• Thi~ paper has five (5) main questions.

Internal Examiner:

Mr. K. Mudenda

External Examiner:

Mr. Andrew Rowan

This examination paper has four (4) pages (including this one)
Question J 1251

A simply supported IPE 180 beam shown in Fig. I spans over a distance of 4.5m and carries a
point load, at C. The load may be considered to be destabilising. The ultimate loads give a
bending moment and shear force diagram as shown in Fig. I. The maximum dellcclion al
service loads is given. The beam is laterally unrestrained having lateral restrainl.s to the
compression flange only at the supports (A & D) and at one other point along the span (al B)
as indicated. These restraints permit rotation in plan. The supports have sufficient. torsional
restraint. Check the suitability of the beam to carry the applied load if it is made in grade

Question 3 1251
/\ simply supported reinforced concrete T-beam located in a severe environment is shown in
Fig.3. /\ section through the beam is shown in Pig.4 (b) . The beam has a clear distance of 6m.
The characteristic load on the bridge is a (dead load) point load of 147kN applied at mid-span.
The characteristic material strengths to be used are/~u = 40MPa,J~= 450MPa and for the shear
links /~v = 250Ml'a. The beam is 450mm deep connected monolithically to a 125mm thick
slab. The characteristic dead load of concrete is 24kN/m3 •

a) Find the required reinforcement for flexure for the beam (only area of
reinforcement). Assume initially Y32 main reinforcing bars and R8 links.
b) What is meant by the term 'nominal links' and when is it appl icable?

With regards the service limit state design of reinforced concrete members answer the
questions that follow:

(a) Why is a triangular stress distribution used for the concrete stress?
(b) What is creep in concrete?
(c) What factors are used to determine the 'creep factor' for concrete?
(See fig.Cl in the code)
