NON-PROBABILITY

SAMPLING
NON PROBABILITY
SAMPLING
is a sampling method that uses non-random criteria to select
individuals for research. This could be based on factors like the
availability, geographical proximity, or expert knowledge of the
individuals you want to research. The aim is to answer a research
question, but it's important to note that this method does not
guarantee that every member of a population has an equal
chance of being selected.
EXAMPLES OF NON-
PROBABILITY SAMPLING:
1. Convenience Sampling: This is a common type of non-
probability sampling where participants are selected based
on their availability and convenience. For example, if a
researcher wants to survey people about their shopping
habits, they might approach individuals in a shopping mall
and ask them to participate in the study. This method is
convenient for the researcher but may not provide a
representative sample of the population
EXAMPLES OF NON-
PROBABILITY SAMPLING:
2. Purposive Sampling: In purposive sampling, participants are
selected based on specific characteristics or criteria that are
relevant to the research question. For instance, if a researcher is
studying the experiences of successful entrepreneurs, they might
purposefully select participants who have achieved significant
success in their respective industries. This sampling method
allows researchers to gather in-depth information from
individuals who possess the desired qualities or experiences.
DISADVANTAGES

1.Sampling error: A perfect representation of the

population is not a guarantee of probability
sampling. As long as the features of the sample
deviate from those of the population, there is
always a possibility of sampling error. The findings'
accuracy and generalizability may be impacted by
this inaccuracy.
DISADVANTAGES

2.Time and Cost: Probability sampling

techniques can be expensive and time-
consuming, particularly if stratification is
necessary or the population is large. It can take
a lot of resources to choose a representative
sample, get in touch with participants, and
gather data.
DISADVANTAGES

3.Infeasibility for Some Populations: For some

populations, such as rare or difficult-to-reach
populations, probability sampling may not be practical
or feasible. Getting a full sampling frame and
guaranteeing these groups are equally represented can
be difficult.
DISADVANTAGES
4.Nonresponse Bias: Nonresponse bias is the result
of chosen individuals declining to take part in the
study, which may introduce bias into the sample.
Ensuring a high response rate can be challenging,
and the sample's representativeness may be
impacted by the traits of nonrespondents that differ
from those of participants.
DISADVANTAGES
5.Limited Control over Sample Composition:
Because probability sampling techniques
depend on chance, researchers' ability to
control the sample's makeup is restricted.
Although randomization lessens bias, it may
not always produce a sample that is perfectly
balanced with respect to particular traits or
subgroups.
DISADVANTAGES

6.Practical Restrictions: Time, money, or

logistical issues are a few examples of the
practical restrictions that probability
sampling may encounter. These limitations
may have an impact on how the sampling is
implemented and carried out.
DISADVANTAGES
7.Complexity in Design and Analysis: Especially
when working with multistage or cluster
sampling, probability sampling methods can
be difficult to design and analyze. To take into
account the intricate sampling design,
researchers must take into account the proper
sampling techniques, sample size calculation,
and statistical adjustments.
ADVANTAGES

• COST-EFFECTIVE:

Because non-probability sampling techniques

don't need a sample frame or an exhaustive list
of every member in the population, they are
typically less expensive and time-consuming
than probability sampling techniques.
ADVANTAGES
• TIME SAVING:
typically require less time to implement
compared to probability sampling methods. Since
researchers do not need to construct elaborate
sampling frames or follow complex procedures for
selecting participants, they can quickly gather
data and move on to analysis.
ADVANTAGES

• CONVENIENCE:
Convenience sampling, a kind of non-
probability sampling, is conducted in a way
that is convenient for the researcher, as the
name implies. The subjects were chosen
because to their close proximity and easy
accessibility.
ADVANTAGES
Useful for Preliminary Research:
When conducting exploratory research to
gain a general understanding of a study
problem, non-probability sampling can be
helpful. Developing a theory that may be
investigated further in a more extensive and
thorough investigation can be beneficial.
ADVANTAGES
• FLEXIBILITY:
The researcher can select the sample using
this kind of sampling based on who they
believe would be a good fit for the
investigation. This implies that the
researcher can choose the sample based on
their own experience and knowledge.
