6 HOW TO STUDY ONLINE

6.1 What does it mean to study a blended module?
Studying a blended module might differ completely from studying some of your other modules at
Unisa.

• All your study material and learning activities for blended- and fully-online modules
are designed to be delivered online on myUnisa. Although we also supply blended
modules with printed material, the module is designed to be delivered online.
• All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you do all your
activities and submit all your assessments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post
your assignments to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All of the communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers
will communicate to you by e-mail, SMS and using the Announcements, the Discussion
Forums and the Questions and Answers tools. You can also use all of these platforms to
ask questions and contact your lecturers.

6.2 myUnisa tools

The main tool that we will use is the Lessons tool. This tool will provide the content of and the
assessments for your module. At times you will be directed to join discussions with fellow
students and complete activities and assessments before you can continue with the module.
It is very important that you log in to myUnisa regularly. We recommend that you log in at least
once a week to do the following:

• Check for new announcements. You can also set your myLife e-mail account so that you
receive the announcement e-mails on your cellphone.
• Do the Discussion Forum activities. When you do the activities for each learning unit, we
want you to share your answers with the other students in your group. You can read the
instructions and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need to go online to post
your messages.
• Do other online activities. For some of the learning unit activities you might need to post
something on the Blog tool, take a quiz or complete a survey under the Self-Assessment
tool. Do not skip these activities because they will help you complete the assignments and
the activities for the module.
We hope that by giving you extra ways to study the material and practise all of the activities, you
will succeed in the blended module. To get the most out of the blended module you MUST go
online regularly to complete the activities and assessments on time.

7 ASSESSMENT
7.1 Assessment plan
This module consists of a number of continues assessment activities, all of which contribute
towards your final mark for this module. The following is a breakdown of the online assessment
activities as they become due during the semester:

7
SEMESTER ASSSESSMENT ASSESSMENT TYPE
Assessment 01 Written

Assessment 03 Written
2024
Semester 1

SEMESTER ASSSESSMENT ASSESSMENT TYPE

Assessment 01 Written

2024
Semester 2

Assessment 02 Written

Assessment 03 Written

7.2 Year/Final mark

Assignment 01 counts 40% of your year mark, Assignment 02 counts 30% and Assignment 03
counts 30% of your year mark. The year mark contributes 40% towards your final mark, and
the examination mark contributes 60%. Please note that your year mark has to be a
minimum of 40% in order for you to gain admission to the examination. However, you need to
achieve a final mark of 50% in order to pass this subject/module.

If you obtain an examination mark of less than 40%, your year mark will not be considered for
your final mark. This means that you will NOT qualify for the supplementary examination if you
obtain less than 40% in the examination.
Calculation of your year mark
Example
:

Assignment 01 = 70% Assignment 02 = 50% Assignment 03 = 50%

Year mark = (70 x 40%) + (50 x 30%) + (50 x 30%)

= 28 + 15 + 15
= 58%

8
MNO2607/101/3/2024

Calculation of your final mark

Example:
Year mark = 58% Examination mark = 60%
Final mark = (58 x 20%) + (60 x 80%)
= 11.6 + 48
= 59.6
= 60%
You will automatically receive the correct answers for Assignment 01, Assignment 02 and
Assignment 03. Feedback on assignment answers will be sent to all students registered for this
module in a follow-up tutorial letter numbered 201. As soon as you receive the feedback,
please check your answers. The assignments and feedback constitute an important part of
your learning and should help you to be better prepared for the examination.
Please note that feedback will only be sent after the due date of the assignment and the
lecturer will not supply any answers to the assignment question before that date.
7.3 Submission of assessments
All assessments must be completed and submitted electronically via myUnisa. For detailed
information and requirements as far as assessments are concerned, see the brochure
