ACIDS and BASES
I. THEORY
Acids and bases occur in many solutions and items in the home. The acidity
and alkalinity of such solutions and household items can be determined
based on some of their characteristics, such as taste and feel, and the use of
indicators. Indicators are compunds that turn different colors in acidic or
basic solutions. Litmus papers can be used as a qualitative means to test
solutions, while, pH papers and pH meters can be used to make quantitative
observations that can be used for a more specific comparison of solutions.
II. OBJECTIVES
To measure the pH of different substances using different pH measuring
tools.
III. MATERIALS
pH paper
pH meter
litmus paper
beaker
IV. PROCEDURE
Determine the pH values for each of the given substances using pH paper,
litmus paper and pH meter.
Substances pH value from pH value from Color change in litmus

V. QUESTIONS
1. Based on the measured pH values, which of the solutions are acids?
___________________________________________________________________
Which of the solutions are bases?
__________________________________________________________________
2. Which among the acids tested is the weakest?________
3. Which among the tested acids is the strongest?_________
4. Which among the tested bases is the weakest?_________
5. Which among the tested bases is the strongest?________
GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2
Quarter 4
A. Identification

Direction: Identify what is being asked and write the answer on the space provided.
__________________1. This is a tool used in measuring the pH of a substance and is coated
with a chemical indicator that transitions in the presence of hydroxen or hydroxide ion.
__________________2. A strip of paper that is chemically treated with a dye. Blue paper turns
red under acid conditions.
__________________3. A scientific instrument that measures the hydrogen-ion activity in
water based soulutions.

__________________4. A unit of measure which describes the degree of acidity or alkalinity

of a solution.
_________________5. It is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity.
B. Problem Solving
1. What is the pH of a solution if the [H3O] is 3.4 x10-5M?

2. The pH of a solution is measured and determined to be 7.52. What is

the hydronium ion concentration?
