11. (a) What is the significance of the compression index?(5 marks) (rate of heat
exchange from the gas to the surrounding)
(b) For a small portable reciprocating compressor, what is the function of those fins
found on the cylinder of the compressor? What is the purpose of this function?
(To help to remove as much heat as possible from the gas so that the work input
could be reduced) (5 marks)
12. For mixing of low viscosity liquid at a Reynolds Number below 300, the power curve is
represented by the equation, log = m log NRe + log C, where m is the gradient of
value –1 and log C is the intercept on the log axis. Prove that the viscosity of the
liquid and not the density influences the power requirement of the impeller.(Hint: From
the log equation and information given, convert the loq equation to a normal equation
by removing the logarithm function and also substitute the definition of Reynolds
number into the equation and simplify. The final equation should not have the viscosity
term) (10 marks)
13. (a) What are the baseline behaviours of centrifugal pumps?(5 marks) (refer to
notes – Visual, audio, Sensing, EG. FLOWRATE, TEMP, NOISE
PRODUCED)
(b) What will happen if the pump is operated with the discharge valve closed for a
long time? Use the First Law of Thermodynamics to explain. (5 marks)
Given: U = Q – W for a closed system.
H = Q – Ws for an open system.
? H is the change in enthalpy, Q is the heat transfer, W and W s are the work
done. (Heat will be generated, eventually leading to the boiling of liquid in the
casing because pump energy added go to increase the internal energy of
the liquid when it is in a closed system)
14 A centrifugal pump is used to pump liquid A (at 30o C) at a rate of 1 x 10-3 m3 /s from a
large open tank to the top of another open tank. The suction and discharge pipe
diameters are 75 mm and 50 mm, respectively. The Developed Head and Efficiency of
the pump at the discharge flow rate are 4 m of liquid A and 14%, respectively.
Assumptions made: Frictional Losses on the suction and discharge piping are 80 J/kg
and 100 J/kg, respectively.
Atmospheric pressure = 1.013 x 105 N/m2 .
g = 9.81 m/s2 .
Density of liquid A (at 30o C) = 2 000 kg/m3 .
Viscosity of liquid A (at 30o C) = 8.6 x 10 -4 kg/ms.
Vapour pressure of liquid A (at 30o C) = 25 000 N/m2 .
