Q.No. Questions Marks

1 A 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has a full load speed of 960 rpm. 6
Calculate
(i) the number of poles
(ii) rotor emf frequency
(iii) speed of rotor field with respect to rotor structure; with respect to
stator structure and with respect to stator field.

2 (a) Develop the equivalent circuit of a three phase Induction motor. 5+1
(b) “ Three phase induction motor is an asynchronous machine”-explain.

3 Determine the parameters of the equivalent circuit of a 3-phase induction 4

motor from the following test results:
No-load test: 400V, 9 A, 560 W
Block-rotor test: 210V, 36A, 4820W.
Neglect core-loss resistance. Per phase stator resistance is equal to 0.72
ohm.

4 A 20 kW, 6-pole, 400 V, 50 Hz 3-phase induction motor has a full load slip 6
of 0.02. If the torque, lost in mechanical losses is 20 Nm, find the rotor
ohmic loss, motor input and efficiency. Stator losses total 900 W.

5 Explain double revolving field theory of 1-phase induction motor. From 5+1
there draw the torque-speed characteristics.

6 Explain the principle of operation of capacitor-start type single-phase 5+1

induction motor with necessary diagrams and phasor. What is the
function of the centrifugal switch?

Wish you all the Best

7 Explain the damper winding method of starting of a synchronous motor. 4

8 A 5 kW, 400V star connected synchronous motor with an internal 6

reactance of 10 Ω is operating at 50 % load at unity pf. Now the excitation
is increased by 1%. What will be the new load in percent, if the power
factor is to be kept same? Neglect all losses and consider linear magnetic
circuit.

9 A synchronous generator is connected to an infinite bus with excitation 6

voltage Ef = 1.3pu. The generator has a synchronous reactance of 1.1 pu
and is delivering real power (P) of 0.6 pu to the bus. Assume the infinite
bus voltage to be 1.0 pu. Neglect stator resistance. Find the reactive power
(Q) in pu supplied by the generator to the bus.

Wish you all the Best
