1.0 SCOPE
This specification outlines the construction requirements of the cathodic protection
systems for pipeline.
2.0 REFERENCES
Unless otherwise specified, the installation, fabrication, testing, and performance of the
cathodic protection system shall be in accordance with the latest edition of the following
standards and codes:
2.1 American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
3.0 GENERAL
3.1 In general, installation work shall be carried out as per contract drawings and
documents issued for construction and the instructions issued by Client engineer
from time to time.
3.2 The Contractor shall be responsible for the complete design, fabrication, supply,
inspection, works testing, packaging and commissioning of all equipment’s / items
which are a part of the cathodic protection system for Pipeline, provision of all
documentation ready for delivery, plus full compliance with applicable codes,
standards, specifications and regulations, for a fully functional cathodic protection
system. The Contractor shall be responsible for supervision of the installation at
site and full commissioning and acceptance trials.
Page 3 of 7 04-04-17
3.3 The work shall comply with all applicable laws, regulations, etc., pertaining to the
construction of the systems.
3.4 Catholically protected facilities shall include the following structures:
a. Underground carbon steel piping with a dielectric protective coating
b. Reinforcing carbon steel elements.
3.5 Hazardous Areas – Equipment Selection for Cathodic Protection Systems
a) The Cathodic Protection control system will be located at the facility.
Vendor to propose suitable arrangement for placement of control system.
b) CP control system will be installed in a non-hazardous area; however other
components may be located adjacent to pipeline flanges where hazardous
areas exist.
c) Isolating devices feeding equipment located in hazardous areas shall switch
all poles of the supply including the neutral.
d) Toxic materials (such as asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, mercury,
lead-based or isocyanate paints, magnesium and the like) shall not be used.

4.0 INSTALLATION
Before starting of the installation work all related drawings, specifications and vendor
instructions shall be carefully studied. Necessary site surveys shall be made to ensure the
readiness and availability of the site and completion of preparatory works. Necessary
manpower, tools & plant shall be arranged. Permits/authorization (if required) shall be
obtained before the commencement. Installation work shall be carried out in compliance
with the local/national codes and area classifications, specifications and drawings.
Installation of cathodic protection systems shall be in accordance with the following:
4.1 Impressed Current Anode System
Anodes shall be installed in coke breeze. Care shall be taken so that the backfilling
is compacted properly to avoid voids around the anodes.
4.2 Rectifier Installation
4.2.1 Rectifier installation shall be as per area classification.
4.2.2 The rectifier installation shall be done in such a manner that the possibility
of any damage is minimized.
4.2.3 The rectifier case shall be properly grounded.
4.2.4 Lead wire connections to the rectifier shall be mechanically secure and
electrically conductive. Before the power is energized, it must be verified
that the negative lead is connected to the structure to be protected and that
the positive lead is connected to the anodes.
Page 5 of 7 04-04-17
4.2.5 Negative lead wire connection to the structure to be protected shall be made
using Cadweld material. All positive cable connections and wire splices
shall be carefully waterproofed and covered with electrical insulating
material.
4.3 Cable Installation
4.3.1 All anode lead wires, header cables and wire splices shall be carefully
inspected prior to backfilling. Backfill shall be by sand free of sharp stones
or other material that could damage wire insulation. Cables may be
installed in rigid galvanized steel conduits in areas subject to frequent
excavation or where cable insulation is prone to damage as per design
specifications.
4.3.2 Underground connecting splices of the header cable (positive lead wire
from rectifier) to the ground installation shall be avoided. Connections
between header cable and anode lead
Wires shall be mechanically secured and electrically conductive. Sufficient
slack shall be left to avoid strain on wires. All splices and connections shall
be sealed to prevent ingress of moisture to ensure electrical isolation
4.4 Permanent Reference Electrode
4.4.1 For tank cathodic protection, pipeline to soil potential shall be measured by
installing permanent reference electrode and lead wire as per design
drawings and vendor instructions. The reference electrode lead wire shall
be connected to the pipeline, where it shall be terminated in a test station.
4.4.2 The permanent reference cell shall be installed as per manufacturer’s
recommended procedure.
4.4.3 Th number and locations of permanent reference electrodes shall be as per
drawings and specifications.
4.5 Test stations, connections and bonding
4.5.1 The structure and test lead wires shall be clean, dry and free of foreign
material at points of connection. Connections of test lead wires to the
structure shall be installed so that they will remain mechanically secure and
electrically conductive. Cadweld connections shall be used for this purpose.
Care shall be taken and proper safety measures shall be taken where a
Page 6 of 7 04-04-17
hazardous atmosphere may exist during this process.
4.5.2 Test and lead wires shall be color coded, numbered and identification tags
attached as per specifications.
5.0 TESTING AND INSPECTION
5.1 The testing of rectifier/transformer units, anodes and functionality of
protective devices shall be carried out as per manufacturer
recommendations.
5.2 Tests shall be carried out in the presence of client engineer and test formats
shall be duly signed and maintained.
6.0 DOCUMENTATION
6.1 One set of test results shall be prepared and submitted to the client.
6.2 One complete set of as-built drawings shall be submitted to the client.
