OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:

A. Identify the elements of a short story.


B. Appreciate the importance of these elements; and
C. Create their own short story with the elements.

Good morning, class! Good morning sir/ma'am! We are glad to

under your chairs, and arrange your

clip. After which, we will imitate or do
what is being done in the video. The title

the story or elements of the story. I let
you sing and dance with the song since it
has something to do with our lesson for
today. What is a short story class?
A short story is fictional work or prose
that is shorter in length than a novel.
Very good! It is a short story, wherein
you can read it in a one sitting only.

A. ACTIVITY

Before we proceed to our topic, let us


have first an activity.

The name of this activity is word chase


puzzle.

Now i will divide the class into two


groups and your task is to find the

and write it on the paper. Afterwards,
you will paste your work on the board.

Going back to our activity, what are the


words that you find in the word chase

That's right. These words are elements of


the short story.

We have five elements of a short story.

The first element of a short story is the


setting.

Okay class, what comes into your mind


It is the time and location that a story
when you hear about setting?

Next we have the character. What do Any individual who takes the action.
you think does character mean?

Very good! it is a person or sometimes


even an animal who takes parts and the
action of a story or a piece of literary
work.

And there are several types of character.

The first one is protagonist. What is the


protagonist?
The main character in the story.

Very good! sometimes they are the hero


or the heroine in a literary work.

Next is antagonist. What is the role of


antagonist?
Go against the protagonist.

That's right. The one who opposes the


protagonist and some way.

We also have Supporting characters that


serve as the backdrop; And Foil character
someone who contrasts with another
character.

Next element is the plot. What do you


think class does blood pertains?

Excellent! It pertains about the main


things and the sequence that happened Sequence of the events in the story.

I have a Freytag's pyramid about the five


parts of the plot.

Based on the pyramid what do you think


about exposition?

That's right! The start of the story where


they characters and settings are
revealed.

The beginning of the story

Next is the rising action. what is rising


action?

This is where the story become


complicated and the conflict is revealed.
Very good! We also have climax which is
the highest part of interest and the
turning point of the story.

Next is falling action. this is when the


events and complications start to
resolve themselves.

And lastly we have resolution the trial


outcome or ending of the story.

Next element is the conflict. what is


conflict?

Any form of struggles that main


character faces.
That's right.

It's all about struggle between the main


character and the outside force. And we
have four different types of conflict.
these are:

1. man vs. self conflict - struggle within


the protagonists' mind that needs to be
overcome

2. man vs. nature - conflict between


character and nature (eg. typhoon).

3. man vs. man - fiction between


protagonist and the antagonist or other
character in the story.

4. man vs. society - struggle between the


protagonist and the social codes and the
story.

the author's intended message.

These are setting, characters, plot,
conflict, point of view and theme.

D. APPLICATION

groups. Each group will think of a story
that they already know and identify the
elements of a short story. After that you
will share your work in the class.
