THE ANALYSIS OF SILENT WAY METHOD IN ENGLISH FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE

A. Background of The Problem

English is an international language, most people in the world use English as a means of

communication between nations around the world. English is important to learn. It is necessary to

pay attention to several important techniques in learning English, such as modeling, imitating,

instructing and implement method. In the learning process, not all students can understand it

materials using only one technique, but also requires other elements. It's in according to Levert

(1998, as quoted in Abdurrahman, 2015, p. 24), the use Imitation or modeling in the learning

process is not enough to produce sound or phonetic series. For example, in teaching vocabulary

the teacher not only becomes a model in spelling words, but also he has to apply methods to make

students memorize them. Therefore, in teaching language the use of methods is a significant key

to successful teaching. According to Nunan (1991, p. 2), methods are procedures and practices for

the orderly presentation of language materials used in teaching. In other words, the method is the

teacher's way of teaching language, and as an effort to streamline learning. As Xue & Fang said

“Language teaching approaches and methods have highlighted language teaching theory and

practice” (2007, p. 69). In language teaching, there are many methods that can be used to teach

English Foreign Language (EFL) classes, one of them is the Silent way method.

The silent way is a language teaching method designed by Gattecno. in the In this method,

teachers are forced to be silent as much as possible in class, so that students are encouraged to

produce more language (Richards & Rogers, 1986, p. 81). The procedure for the silent method of

teaching language is to give instructions. For example, in teaching vowel sounds, the teacher will

attach five blocks of vowel sounds (a,i,u,e,o) on the blackboard with different colors. Then, the
teacher will point one by one letter without uttering a sound a second time. For the third time, he

will mention the sound of the letter. Students will repeat the sound themselves when the teacher

points to the block of vowel sounds. Thus, "students are expected to be independent, autonomous

and responsible in learning” (Gattecno, 1979, cited in Richard & Rodger, 1986, p. 100). Students

can take a role in learning activities with self. The silent way method aims to give beginner level

students orally and the aural facility of the target language in basic elements (Richards & Rogers,

1986, p. 103).

In this study, researchers will critically analyze the silent way method used in EFL classes.

Critical analysis means an opinion expressed by someone to provide recommendations about

arguments. There are several technical differences and approaches in language teaching methods.

According to Xiu & Fang (2007, p. 69), “There is still much controversy about its usefulness and

feasibility”. The silent way method is taken from the match method. Therefore, this research tries

to get information about students' opinions about the silent way method applied in class, whether

it is effective or should add some activities to make the method according to learning English.
