Photo Editing using Adobe Photoshop Adobe Photoshop is a powerful photo editing software program. Images can be created and altered using the functions offered in Adobe Photoshop. It allows you to work in layers. Aspiring photo editors can edit an image by adding new layers, without altering the original image. Layers can be added and/or subtracted as you work on an image. Introduce the Adobe Photoshop window environment.

THE PARTS OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP WINDOW Title Bar Displays the name/title of your recent image or picture. Menu Bar Provides different sub-menus/commands for photo manipulation. It includes commands found within other parts of the workspace, as well as additional valuable commands for image adjustment options. Option Bar Provides different option setting/commands for the selected tools. This bar changes base on which tool is selected from tools pane. Toolbox toolbox or the tools panel is likely the part of the Photoshop workspace you will find yourself working the most. As the name would imply, it is where the tools you will apply directly to the canvass are found. The panel can be broken down into a few subgroups, including selection tools, drawing tools and others. You will notice that many of the tools in the panel appear with a small black triangle in their bottom righthand corner. This means that there are addition Navigator, Color, History and Layers Palette: The palettes in Photoshop are located to the right of the canvass work area by default. The palettes include: Navigator, Color, History and Layers and tools that can be applied to the existing art/image opened in the canvass, or to specific layers or parts of your document. Each palette also includes a palette options fly-out menu, which is located at

the upper right hand corner of each palette. This fly-out includes additional options for actions for the created palette. There are many more palettes available in Photoshop that can be displayed on most screens at one time, and palettes available that are not visible by default can be accessed from the Window option on the Menu Bar. Status Bar- Displays the status of your created document/file. It also displays the different settings you have done to your work as well as file properties and tools used. Working Area/Canvass- The canvass is where your work is done and displayed. It is the largest element of the workspace and is located in the middle of the application. It can be adjusted to be smaller or larger than your actual document by selecting Image Canvass size from the Menu bar. All of the content resulting from your application of the tools and palette options are found in the canvass. FIRM-UP Have learners compare and edited to a non-edited picture/image.(the teacher/student supply the edited and non-edited picture/image) Let learners answer the questions: What special features have been applied on the edited picture using a non-edited picture as your reference? What photo editing concepts are applied in the edited picture? Guide learners in viewing video clips showing an actual process of editing a picture/image. What are the advantages and disadvantages of editing a picture/image?

THE PARTS OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP WINDOWS(with their corresponding shortcut keys) File (Alt+F) The File menu is where you begin and end. From this menu, image files can be opened, created, saved, printed, imported or exported. Edit (Alt+E) The Edit menu allows you to make specific to the image you have opened in the program. You can undo a previous edit, as well as perform cut, paste and copy functions. Image (Alt+I) The Image menu allows you to make adjustments to your program. You can change the size, color mode, contrast, adjust hues, saturation and color levels. Layers (Alt+L) The Layer menu controls how you use layers within your program. You can add, duplicate, arrange, fill or make other changes to the layers you are working on. Select (Alt+S) The Select menu helps you select portion or the entire image to work on. This menu also allows you to deselect or inverse a selection. Filter (Alt+T)

The Filter menu allows you to make a number of filter adjustments to your overall image. There you can make artistic changes, add textures, sharpen or blur and adjust the noise levels. Images can be instantly transformed to resemble chalk drawing or color. View (Alt+V) / Window (Alt+V) The View allow you to zoom in or out. The Window menu allows you to open palettes and menus on your screen, and arrange your toolbars, workspace and create animation. Have learners explore insightful file menu options of the Adobe Photoshop. Mysterious ADOBE PHOTOSHOP FILE MENU OPTIONS (With their corresponding shortcut keys) New File(Ctrl+N) The New File menu is where you begin/create a new photoshop file. From the Menu Bar under File options, image files can be opened, created, saved, printed, imported or exported. Open (Ctrl+O) From the File menu, the Open command enables to open picture/photo/images of different types and your previous saved Adobe Photoshop files. Browse (Shift+Ctrl+O) From the File menu, the Browse command will let you select picture/photo/images of different types of Adobe Photoshop files. Open As (Alt+Ctrl+O) From the File menu, the Open As command will let you select a picture/photo file to open (same as Open Command) Open Recent From the File menu, the Open Recent command will let you select/open your ten (10) most recent saved picture/photo Close (Ctrl+W) From the File menu, the Save commands will let you close your photo editing task. Save (Ctrl+S) From the File menu, the Save commands will let you save your photo editing work. Save As (Alt+Ctrl+S) Form the File menu, the Save as command will let you save your photo editing work

with other given filenames. Import File Form the file menu, the Import File command will let you import plug-ins of other related Adobe Photoshop features. Export File From the File menu, the Import File command will let you import plug-ins of other related Adobe Photoshop features. Page Setup (Shft+Ctrl+P) From the File menu, the Page Setup command will let you set page properties for margins, paper, and orientation and printer type. Print Preview (Ctrl+P) From the File menu, the Print Preview command will let you set preview properties for layout positions, scale print size, printer type and print options. Print (Alt+Ctrl+P) From the File menu, the Print command directly sends print data on the selected default printer. FIRM-UP

Have them decide on a presentation that could acceptable showcase their answer Enjoin learners to firm up understanding by watching video clips on Photo Editing using Adobe Photoshop. They may use available video presentations from the Net. Process learners understanding on the observation made during the presentation. Assist learners in manipulating basic procedures in Photo Editing software (file manipulations, tool box commands, miscellaneous, etc.) Have learners identify the different parts and functions of Photo Editing software window.

Have learners put up a display/exhibition of various printouts derives from the use of Photo Editing software. Ask learners in group of five to apply skills on putting a picture over another picture. Have learner market their products/services in the community. Assess learners at the level of performance using the criteria in Stage 2.

 The Adobe Photoshop Toolbox EXPLORE In this phase, learners will be exposed to varied activities that will diagnose their understanding, determine their prior knowledge and surface their initial concepts that relate with photo editing software. Draw out learners understanding by the asking essential questions. Ask learners to explore on the topics below by letting them work in small groups. Photoshop Tool Basics (with Shortcut Keys) This is a quick summary of Photoshops Tools palette with a description of each tools functions and shortcuts. This shall be very helpful to those who are neophyte to Photoshop software Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) Use this tool to make selections on your image, in a rectangular shape. This changes the area of your image that is affected by other tools or actions to be within the defined shape. Holding the [Shift] key while dragging your selection, restricts the shape to a perfect square. Holding the [Alt] key while dragging sets the center of the rectangle to where your cursor started. Move Tool (V) Use this tool to, well, move things. Usually you use it to move a Layer around after it has been placed. Hold the [Shift] key to limit the movements to vertical/horizontal.

Polygon Lasso Tool (L) Use this to draw selections in whatever shape you would like. To close the selection, either click on the beginning point (youll see the cursor change when youre on it), or just double-click. When holding the [Ctrl] key, youll see the cursor change, and the next time you click, it will close your selection.

Magic Wand Tool (W) Use this to select a color range. It will select the block of color, or transparency, based on wherever you click. In the Options Bar at the top, you can change the Tolerance to make your selections more/less precise.

Crop Tool (C) The Crop Tool works similarly to the Rectangular Marquee tool (see above if you have no short-term memory). The difference is when you press the [Enter/Return] key, it crops your image to the size of the box. Any information that was on the outside of the box is now gone. Not permanently, you can still undo.

Slice Tool (K) This is used mostly for building websites, or splitting up one image into smaller ones when saving out. Its kind of an advanced tool.

Healing Brush Tool (J) This is a really useful tool. Mildly advanced. You can use this tool to repair scratches and specs and stuff like that on images. It works like the Brush tool (see below). You choose your cursor size, then holding the [Alt] key, you select a nice/clean area of your image. Let go of the [Alt] key and paint over the bad area. It basically copies the info from the first area to the second, in the form of the Brush tool. Only, at the end, it averages the information, so it blends.

Brush Tool (B) This is one of the first basic tools of Photoshop. It paints one your image, in whatever color you have selected, and whatever size you have selected.

Clone Stamp Tool (S) This is very similar to the Healing Brush Tool (see above). You use it the exact same way, except this tool doesnt blend at the end. Its a direct copy of the information from the first selected area to the second. When you learn to use both of these tools together in perfect harmony, you will be a Photoshop master.

History Brush Tool (H) This tool works just like the Brush Tool (see above) except the information that it paints with is from the original state of your image. If you go Window>History, you can see the History Palette. The History Brush tool paints with the information from whatever History state is selected.

Eraser Tool (E) This is the anti-Brush tool. It works like an eraser and erases whatever information wherever you click and drag it. If youre on a Layer, it will erase the information transparent. If you are on the background layer, it erases with whatever secondary color you have selected.

Gradient Tool (G) You can use this to make a gradiation of colors. Gradiation doesnt appear to be a word, but it makes sense anyway. It creates a blending of your foreground color and background color when you click and drag it. Like a gradient.

Blur Tool (R) The Blur tool is cool. It makes things blurry. Click and drag to make things blurry. The more you click and drag, the blurrier things get.

Dodge Tool (O) This tool isnt as crappy as the car brand. Its actually used to lighten whatever area you use it on. As long as it is not absolute black. Absolute black wont lighten.

Path Selection Tool (A) You use this tool when working with paths. Since this is all about the basics, I wont go into details. Its related to the Pen Tool (see below) though

Horizontal Type Tool (T) It makes type. Or text. Or whatever you want to call it. You can click a single point, and start typing right away. Or you can click and drag to make a bounding box of where your text/type goes. There are a lot of options for the Type Tool. Just play around, its fairly straight-forward.

Pen Tool (P)

I mentioned this tool above. Its for creating paths, in which you would use the Path Selection Tool to select the path. Paths can be used in a few different ways, mostly to create clipping paths, or to create selections. You use the tool by clicking to add a point. If you click and drag, it will change the shape of your path, allowing you to bend and shape the path for accurate selections and such.

Rectangle Tool (U) By default it draws a Shape Layer in the form of a rectangle. It fills the rectangle with whatever foreground color you have selected.

Hand Tool (T) You can really make short work of your job with the Hand Tool. Its for moving your entire image within a window. So if youre zoomed in and your image area is larger than the window, you can use the Hand Tool to navigate around your image. Just click and drag. You can get to this tool at any time when using any other tool by pressing and holding the [Spacebar]

Zoom Tool (Z) Pretty obvious what this tool does. It allows you to zoom into your image. Dont be dumb, it doesnt actually change the size of your image. Hold the [Alt] key to zoom out. Holding the [Shift] key will zoom all of the windows you have open at the same time. Double-click on the Zoom Tool in the palette to go back to 100% view. BONUS!! These are your color boxes. Foreground (in the front) and Background (in the back). Click on either one to bring up the color select dialog box.

FIRM-UP Have learners compare an edited picture to a non-edited picture/image. (The teacher or the student may supply the edited and non-edited picture/image) Let leaners answer the following questions: What special features have been applied on the edited picture having a non-

edited picture as your reference? What concepts of photo editing are applied in the edited picture? Guide learners in viewing video clips showing an actual process of editing a picture/image. Lead them is answering the following questions: Ask learners to surf video clips on photo editing using Adobe Photoshop from the net. Process learners understanding on the observation made during the presentation. Assist learners in manipulating basic procedures in photo editing software such as file manipulations, tool box commands, miscellaneous, etc. Have learners identify the different parts and functions of photo editing software window. Assist learners in identifying the tools used in editing pictures. Administer a formative evaluation to determine learners level of understanding. If they are close to the desired level of understanding, they may be encouraged to think of was they could apply these to creative tasks. DEEPEN Encourage learner to ask question that will clarify certain issues that relate with photo enhancement and alteration. Ask learners to perform basic photo editing software operations leading to photo enhancement. Request volunteers to assist peers in the performance of tasks that require photo/image enhancements. Test a group of learners on how there would assist peers who are in still encountering difficulty in invoking the appropriate commands and operations of editing tools to enhance picture/images. Have learners work independently on specific activity that would test their skills in photo editing. Have learners apply the concepts of editing images on any picture/view of their choice. Require them to present their outputs before the class for critiquing and or for possible refinements, if there are any. Oblige learners to print the final output by reminding them of the procedural requirements they should observe before printing the final output. Encourage learners to critique the product/output of their classmates.
