REVISION WORKSHEET SUBJECT: ENGLISH CORE (301)

CLASS: XI
SECTION A (READING)
1. Read the passage carefully:
Did you know that India commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa in 1915, a century later in
2015, with, among other things, two coins, each of 10 rupee and 100 rupee denominations? Did you know
that, after independence, it was proposed to replace the King’s portrait on the currency notes with that of
Gandhi, a specimen five-rupee note with Mahatma Gandhi on the obverse, was printed but not approved and
never released?

Find more such fascinating details in “Global Collectibles of Mahatma Gandhi through Bank Notes, Coins and
stamps” launched on Sunday, October 2, 2022. Edited and published by Sushil Kumar Agrawal of Mintage
World, an online museum, the book is a unique archive on commemorative coins, stamps and banknotes on
Gandhi released by 144 countries across the world. Also, there are miniature and souvenir sheets released
on the Mahatma, depicting various stages in his life.
For us, to us Indians, it’s a matter of pride that our Father of the Nation has been honored with collectibles
across the globe, from India to Argentina, Cameroon to Comoros, Mauritius to Monaco and Venezuela to
Vietnam.
Additionally, it was added by saying that the collection could not have come at a better time. We have just
celebrated Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the 75 years of our independence, and the Mahatma’s yet another birth
anniversary is here. “When we started working on it, we didn’t expect its release on 75 years of Independence
or on Gandhi Jayanti”, said Agrawal.
Apart from creating awareness among people about how the world has commemorated Bapu over the years,
explained Agrawal, the aim is also to bring people back to the hobbies of collecting coins, stamps and bank
notes.
Further, it was said that “The addiction with social media platforms like WhatsApp, Face book, Instagram and
Twitter have robbed many of us of the fascinating habits like collecting coins, bank- notes and stamps.” The
collection informs us that the first banknote featuring Gandhi was a 500-rupee note printed in October 1987.
“This is a monumental work since the new generation is forgetting that Gandhi played such a big role in our
freedom movement. The document should not only inspire researchers and scholars but young readers too to
understand how the world sees Gandhi who is a global figure,” said Sanjiv Nigam, Director, Mahatma Gandhi-
founded Hindustani Prachar Sabha in Mumbai.

Q2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
1. Depression is a common problem of modern times. Both the rich and poor suffer from it. According to the
World Health Organization, by the year 2020, depression will become the second leading cause of disease in
the world. Many solutions have been prescribed for the problem of depression but most have proved to be
ineffective as a complete cure. They may offer temporary relief but fail to resolve the problem permanently. 2.
2. Meditation is often advised to treat this problem of depression. But meditation focuses on the heart and
modern science has established that the heart is merely an organ that pumps blood, whereas many kinds of
depression stem from the mind. It is the mind that controls the heart and not vice versa. In many cases,
depression is non-physical and the heart is physical. How can a physical organ resolve a non-physical
problem? We also often hear about physical techniques to counter depression. But the reach of physical
techniques is confined to the body and does not extend to the mind. Many kinds of depression are the result of
non-acceptance of reality. The real solution to this problem is then acceptance of reality. While non-acceptance
creates the problem, acceptance of reality will solve it.
3. Our world is one of freedom, competition, challenge and clash of interests. This nature of human life is
bound to create problems. No one is exempted from this process. This being so, to de-stress, learn the art of
stress management rather than trying to eliminate the stress. A person may become sad upon facing a loss in
business or feeling discriminated against at work. He may give in to anxiety and frustration if he suffers a loss
in an election, his love marriage turns into a problem marriage or if he is offended by criticism. In all such
cases, a person becomes negative because of being unaware of the real cause. He attributes the cause to
another person and holds this person responsible for his difficulties. He fails to realize that all these are due to
the law of nature. If you attribute the cause of the problem to the divine law of nature, it will arouse no
negativity, but when you attribute it to a person, it brings on negative thinking. This is because the law of nature
is not your rival, whereas you see a person as your competitor. When you attribute the cause of your problem
to a rival, it will invariably arouse negative thoughts and cause anger. But when you attribute the cause to the
law of nature, because it is not your rival and is equal in its treatment of all, it will lead to introspection.
a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, makes notes on it using headings and sub-headings.
Use recognizable abbreviations wherever necessary (minimum 4). Supply a suitable title to it.
(b) Write a summary of the above passage in about 80-100 words.
