ABSTRACT

This publication explores the critical role of youth in Tanzania in

advocating for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness and
action. Drawing on data from trusted sources, including
governmental health agencies, international organizations, and
academic research, it provides insights into the current state of
AMR in Tanzania, its implications for public health, and the need
for proactive measures to address this global health threat.

Over 200 stakeholders participated at the global consultations

on AMR awareness raising, organized in 2022 and identified
young people (children, students and youth) as a priority audience
for awareness and education efforts. Youth play a significant role
as future professionals and consumers. They can also be ‘agents
of change’ with their energy and potential influence on national
and global decision-making processes.

This publication outlines strategies for youth engagement,

including education campaigns, community outreach initiatives,
and partnerships with healthcare providers and policymakers. By
empowering youth to become advocates for AMR awareness and
behavior change, Tanzania can strengthen its efforts to combat
antimicrobial resistance and safeguard the health of its
population.

INTRODUCTION

Antimicrobial resistance refers to the condition where disease-

causing microorganisms do not die when exposed to a proven
drug used to kill them. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a
significant threat to global public health, with serious implications
for the effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs

Solutions to this emerging challenge will require ideas and actions

from a wide range of people and significant changes in the way
we use antimicrobial medicines to treat infections. A good
understanding of AMR, its causes, effects, and current strategies
for mitigation is essential to enable people to engage
meaningfully with the challenge and contribute to solutions.

In Tanzania, like many other countries, AMR is a growing concern,

fueled by factors such as inappropriate antibiotic use, poor
infection control practices, and limited access to quality
healthcare services. Addressing AMR requires a multi-faceted
approach, involving collaboration across sectors and engagement
at all levels of society. In this publication, we explore the potential
role of youth in Tanzania in advocating for AMR awareness and
action, leveraging their energy, creativity, and passion for social
change.

CURRENT STATE OF AMR

Data from the Tanzania Ministry of Health, the World Health

Organization (WHO), and other reliable sources paint a concerning
picture of AMR in Tanzania. Antibiotic resistance is on the rise,
compromising the effectiveness of commonly used antibiotics
and leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare
costs. The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens further
complicates treatment options, posing challenges for healthcare
providers and patients alike. In addition to human health
implications, AMR also threatens animal health, food security, and
economic development in Tanzania.

GLOBAL AMR
KEY FACTS
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top global public
health and development threats. It is estimated that bacterial
AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in
2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths

In addition to death and disability, AMR has significant

economic costs. The World Bank estimates that AMR could
result in US$ 1 trillion additional healthcare costs by 2050, and
US$ 1 trillion to US$ 3.4 trillion gross domestic product (GDP)
losses per year by 2030

THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN
ADVOCATING FOR AMR
AWARENESS:

Youth represent a vital demographic in the fight against

AMR, bringing fresh perspectives, digital savvy, and
grassroots mobilization skills to the table. By harnessing
their potential as advocates for AMR awareness, Tanzania
can amplify its efforts to combat this global health threat.
Youth-led initiatives, such as social media campaigns,
school outreach programs, and peer education sessions,
can reach diverse audiences and drive behavior change at
the community level. Moreover, youth engagement in AMR
advocacy can foster a culture of responsible antibiotic use,
promote infection prevention and control practices, and
support policy development and implementation.

CONCLUSION

As Tanzania confronts the challenge of antimicrobial

resistance, the active involvement of youth is
essential for driving sustainable change and
protecting public health. By equipping young people
with the knowledge, skills, and resources to advocate
for AMR awareness and action, Tanzania can build a
healthier, more resilient society for future
generations. Together, let us empower youth to be
catalysts for positive change in the fight against
antimicrobial resistance.
