Sustainability & Environmental Protection


Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines sustainability as follows:

 ‘Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either
directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is
to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can
exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.’

 Main Sustainability Principles (EPA):


1) Conserve, protect, restore, and improve the supply and quality of natural
resources and environmental media (energy, water, materials, ecosystems, land,
and air) over the long term;
2) Align and integrate programs, tools, incentives, and indicators to achieve as
many positive outcomes as possible in environmental, economic, and social
systems; and,
3) Consider the full life cycles of multiple natural resources, processes, and
pollutants in order to prevent pollution, reduce waste, and create a sustainable
future.

Four Main Types of Sustainability


 Energy Resource Sustainability: It is vital to minimize the natural
resources such as petroleum, timber and coal, that are rapidly being
consumed.
 Ecological Sustainability: Many ecosystems have been stressed or
damaged by urban and suburban development and pollution. It is vital to
maintain the health of ecological systems to ensure sustainable populations,
and the diversity of the flora and the fauna.
 Soil Sustainability: Soil is the foundation material for many civil
engineering projects such as earthen dams and roadways. Soil also has
many other uses in agricultural production and many ecosystems such as
forests, wetlands and grasslands depend on soil. Soil is a natural resource
that need to be preserved.
 Environmental Sustainability: The impacts of urban and suburban
development have been well documented with increased flooding, reduced
groundwater recharge, increased erosion of streams and rivers and
degrading of water quality. Quality of the waters of the earth should be
sustained.

Sustainable &
Environmental Friendly Civil Design
Civil Engineers can help sustainability and environmental
protection by incorporating the following principles in their
design:
 promoting energy efficient & smart buildings
 generally promoting energy conservation, efficiency, and
management
 promoting clean energy renewable electric energy and alternative
energy
 improving water use efficiency and management including
improvement of storm-water management plans
 reducing waste generation and increasing waste treatment
 decreasing any pollution from wastes
 promoting recycling and re-use of materials
 conservation of all natural building materials
