ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES ASSIGNMENT 1

NAME: ACHINT KAUR GANDHI

CLASS: SYBCOM
DIVISION: F
ROLL NO.: 6265

PRODUCT CHOSEN: BOTTLED WATER.

Raw Material Extraction:
Water Source: Extraction of water from natural sources such as springs, wells, or municipal supplies.
Plastic Production: Manufacturing of plastic bottles using petroleum-derived materials like polyethylene
terephthalate (PET).
Manufacturing:
Bottling Process: Processing and bottling of water, including purification, filling, capping, and labeling.
Packaging: Use of plastic bottles, caps, labels, and packaging materials for transportation and retail.
Distribution:
Transportation: Shipping of bottled water from bottling plants to distribution centers and retail outlets,
contributing to carbon emissions.
Packaging: Use of plastic shrink-wrap, cardboard boxes, and pallets for transportation and storage.
Use:
Resource Consumption: Consumption of bottled water for hydration, often in single-use plastic bottles.
Waste Generation: Disposal of empty plastic bottles contributes to solid waste generation and
environmental pollution.
End-of-life Disposal:
Landfill: Disposal of used plastic bottles in landfills contributes to solid waste generation and
environmental pollution.
Recycling: Potential for recycling plastic bottles into new plastic products, although recycling rates vary
widely.
Environmental Impact:

Resource Depletion: Extraction of water resources and petroleum-derived materials for plastic bottle
production.
Pollution: Emissions from manufacturing processes, transportation, and plastic waste contribute to air,
water, and soil pollution.
Waste Generation: Production and disposal of plastic bottles contribute to solid waste generation, marine
debris, and microplastic pollution.
Recommendations:

Source Sustainability: Source water from sustainable and responsibly managed sources to minimize
environmental impact.
Reduce Plastic Usage: Encourage the use of reusable water bottles and promote alternatives like tap water
or filtered water dispensers.
Improve Recycling Infrastructure: Invest in recycling infrastructure and education to increase plastic
bottle recycling rates and reduce plastic waste.
Promote Refill Stations: Install water refill stations in public spaces to encourage refilling reusable bottles
and reduce single-use plastic bottle consumption.
By analyzing the life cycle of bottled water, we can identify opportunities to reduce environmental
impacts and promote sustainable alternatives for hydration and water consumption.
