I B.Tech I Semester (2017-2018)

Applied Physics

Tutorial 1

Interference

1. a) Describe the experimental set up to produce Newton’s rings.

b) Prove mathematically that in the case of Newton’s rings produced by reflected light that at

the centre of ring system dark spot should be produced and hence derive conditions for
interference and expression for the radius of bright and dark rings.

2. In Newton’s ring experiment, the diameter of the 5th ring is 0.30cm and diameter of the 15th
ring is 0.62cm.Find the diameter of the 25th ring.

Tutorial 2
Diffraction

1. Define resolving power of a grating. What is Rayleigh’s criterion for resolving power?
Based on this derivation derive an expression for the resolving power of grating.
2. a) Explain the phenomenon of diffraction.
b) Distinguish between the Fennel’s type of diffraction and Fraunhoffer type of
Diffraction.
c) Distinguish between diffraction Phenomena and interference Phenomenon.
Tutorial 3
Polarization

1. a) Define Quarter Wave Plate and Half wave plate and derive expressions for thickness
of plate in Quarter wave plate and Half Wave plate.

1
b) Find the thickness of half wave and quarter wave plates for a light beam (λ = 589.3nm) if
µo=1.65835 and µe =1.48640
2. a) Explain the following:
i) Polarized light
ii) Double refraction
Lasers

1. Describe the principle & working of a Ruby laser

2. Distinguish between spontaneous & stipulated emission
Tutorial 4
Fiber Optics

1. Define acceptance angle, Acceptance cone, critical angle, Numerical aperture and derive the

expression for Acceptance angle. Show how it is related to numerical aperture.

Electromagnetic fields

2. State Gauss Law of Electrostatics and derive I Maxwell’s field’s equation

Tutorial 5

Quantum mechanics & free electron theory of metals

1. Apply Schrodinger’s equation to the case of a particle in a box and show that the energies of
particle are quantized.
2. Assuming the electron – lattice interaction to be responsible for scattering of conduction
electrons in a metal, obtain an expression for conductivity in terms of relaxation time and
explain any three drawbacks of classical theory of free electrons.
Tutorial 6

Semiconductors & Band Theory of Solids

1. Distinguish between types of semiconductors.

2. (a) Describe the drift and diffusion currents in a semiconductor. Derive their
expressions .Deduce Einstein’s relation.
(b)Find the diffusion coefficient of electron in silicon at 300 K if is

3. (a) Explain Drift velocity, mobility and relaxation time.

(b) Explain E-K Curve and Define Effective Mass of electron with derivation.
