Present Perfect Tense – Has / Have + V3

Uses: 1. Recent Completed action/ Recent changes (*no time)


He has gone out. They have eaten. The students has finished their exam. I have
called them.
2. Unfinished actions (Duration from past until now) (for / since)
I have lived in Paris for 5 years. I have read half of the book.
I have been married for 20 years.
3. Action from the Past still having effects at the Present
She has lost her wallet (She can’t find it). I haven’t fed the dog.
They have stolen the car. Tom has broken the plate.
4. Life experiences (ever/never) +follow by Past Simple in details
I have never eaten beef. I have been to Paris. (not gone). I haven’t dated 2 people at
once. I have ridden a crocodile.
5. Accomplishments Man has walked on the moon.
6. Changes Over Time I’ve become more interested in insects.
7. Multiple actions at different times. I have seen david several times.
• Has / Have + V3
+ve I have eaten lunch.
-ve I haven’t eaten lunch.
? Have you eaten lunch?

• Tenses Comparison
• I feed the dog thrice a day. (Pre Simp)
• I’m not free. I am feeding the dog now. (Pre Cont)
• I fed the dog an hour ago. (Past Simp)
• I have fed the dog. (Pre Perfect)
Words used with Present Perfect
• Just – recent activities
-I’ve just got dumped. - They’ve just gone out.
• Already – a little long ago. Before one has expected.
- Have you fed the dog? I’ve already done that.
-Sorry. They’ve already left.
• Yet – Negative and Questions.
-Have you fed the dog yet? Yes, I have.
- Oh no! I haven’t prepared for the presentation yet.
• Never/Ever + Before – Experience
- I have never tasted anything like this before.
- This is the best compliment I have ever received.
• For – duration -I have played basketball for 5 years.
• Since – the starting time – I have played basketball
• Since 2015.
talking about a period that continues until now recently / in the last few days
/ so far / since breakfast etc.:
-Have you heard anything from Brian recently?
-I've met a lot of people in the last few days.
-Everything is going well. We haven't had any problems so far
-I'm hungry. I haven't eaten anything since breakfast.
-We haven't seen each other for a long time.
today / this evening / this year etc. when these periods are not finished at the time
of speaking
• I've drunk four cups of coffee today.
• Have you had a holiday this year?
• Today I haven't seen Tom this morning. Have you?
• Rob hasn't worked very hard this term.
