CHAPTER THREE

METHOD OF THE STUDY

3.1 Introduction

This chapter outlines the research methodology employed in this study to examine the perception

of credibility in television news coverage among mass communication students of University of

Ilorin. It details the research method, population, sampling technique, data collection instrument,

data collection procedure, and method of data analysis.

3.2 Research Design

The research design refers to the overall strategy chosen to integrate the different components of

the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby ,ensuring effective address to the research

problem (kothari,2021). It constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement and analysis

of data

The research design adopt for this study is descriptive research design, descriptive research

design is use to determine the opinion, attitude, performance and perception of the

correspondent, to the subject under study

3.3 Research Method

This study adopts a quantitative survey research method. This approach is appropriate for

gathering standardized information from a large number of respondents and allows for statistical

analysis of the data. The quantitative survey method is well-suited to examining perceptions and

attitudes across a population, making it ideal for investigating students' perceptions of news

credibility.
3.4 Population of the Study

The population for this study consists of all undergraduatestudents atUniversity of Ilorin. As of

the 2023/2024 academic session, the total number of registered undergraduate students in the

school is approximately 42,000.

3.5 Sample Size and Sampling Technique

A sample size of 100 students will be selected for this study. This sample size is chosen to

balance representativeness with feasibility, given the constraints of time and resources. The

sampling technique employed will be stratified random sampling. This technique ensures that

students from different levels of study (100 to 400 level) are proportionally represented in the

sample, thus providing a more accurate representation of the entire student population.

3.6Research Instrument

The primary data collection instrument for this study will be a close-ended questionnaire. The

questionnaire will be designed to address the research objectives and questions. It will include

sections on demographic information, television news viewing habits, perceptions of news story

credibility across different categories, and factors influencing these perceptions. The use of a

close-ended questionnaire allows for standardized responses that can be easily quantified and

analyzed statistically.

3.7 Validity of the Research instrument

Validity is an attempt to find out whether the test really measures what it is supposed to

measure. Therefore, this posits that after the researcher administers the instrument, the

researcher will examine the degree to which the responses of the respondents are

identical for the set of data. To ensure validity of the research instrument, a pilot test

was done on 20 student of University of Ilorin different from the institution that was

chosen for the study to find out if the instrument is valid. The result was used to adjust

the instrument.

3.8 Reliability of the Research Instrument

The Success or failure of research is dependent upon measurement. Precision and

accuracy are important qualities in any research work. Therefore, to ensure reliability of

the instrument, 20 questionnaires was test-re-test on student of University of Ilorin.

Necessary improvement of the final draft of the instrument was done after the re-test.

3.9 Method of Administration of the research Instrument

The researcher personally visited the selected faculties in the University of Ilorin to carry

out the field work, the questionnaire was used by the researcher to elicit relevant

information from the students, the questionnaire was administered personally, so as to

ensure maximum cooperation of the respondents and to ascertain complete return of

the questionnaire distributed.

3.10 Method of Data Analysis

The responses were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)

Version 26.0 and data Were presented with frequency tables, which provided answers

to the research questions
