CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHOD

3.0 Introduction

This chapter is concerned with the methodology that was used for carrying out the

research. The chapter is presented under the following sub-headings: design of the

study, area of the study, population of the study, sample and sampling technique,

instrument for data collection, validation of instrument, reliability of instrument,

procedure for data collection and method of data analysis.

3.1 Research Design

The descriptive survey research design will be adopted for this study to elicit

information on the assessment of youth organization’s contribution to community

development projects in chikun local government area. This type of research

design is concerned with investigating, documenting and describing events.

Descriptive research designs describe events as they are without any manipulation

of what caused the event or what is being described (Ali, 2006). Descriptive survey

research design was chosen for this study because, this study is a systematic

assessment and as such, this method was used.

3.2 Area of the Study

The research will be carried out using Chikun local government area as a case

study, will entail administration of questionnaire to respondent , Chikun is a local

government area in Kaduna state, Nigeria. Its headquarter is in Kujama, it has an

area of 4,645KM2 and a population of 368,250 (NPC, 2006).

3.4 Population of Study

The population for this study will consist of 100 women in two selected

communities in Chikun Local Government Area. Sample and Sampling technique,

the sample of 200 will be used for this study. This sample size represented 8.06

percent of the entire population as recommended by Cohen, Manion and Morrison

(2011) for a large population.

A multi-stage sampling procedure will be adopted for this study. In the first stage,

simple random sampling technique will be used to select two communities (Romi,

Sabon tasha).

3.5 Sample Size and Sampling Technique

The sampling techniques to be used in carrying out the research is the random

sampling techniques. The population size will be narrowed down to determine the

sampling size.

3.6 Instrument for Data Collection

The instrument which the researcher will use for data collection is structured

questionnaire designed in line with the research questions and hypotheses raised

for the study. The questionnaire titled: “Women Participation in Community

Development”, in chikun local government area.

Consequently, the researcher modified likert’s rating scale of four points will be

incorporated in the questionnaire to be administered with response options A and B

while the response options will be Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Strongly

Disagree (SD), and Disagree (D).

3.7 Validation of the Instrument

To check the validity of the instrument the researcher submitted a copy of the

questionnaire to his project supervisor in the department to check and make

necessary corrections before it is served to the respondent

3.8 Reliability of the Instrument

The reliability of a questionnaire is the ability of the questionnaire to give the same

results when filled out by like-minded people in similar circumstances.

Questionnaire is considered to be reliable to the extent that they were free of

measurement errors. The less error in the questionnaire instrument, the more

consistently they were measured the same attribute time after time.

3.9 Method of Data Presentation and Analysis

Due to the demand and nature of the problem, the data gathered will be analyzed

using descriptive percentage and tabular methods. The result of the findings was

analyzed based on the data gathered from those responded, research interpretation

and comment received from these persons.
