What is an Apprenticeship?
Taking an Apprenticeship means you are learning while you are employed in a salon. As well as taking a hairdressing or barbering qualification, you will also cover key skills that are essential for a successful career.
What is an NVQ/SVQ?
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are qualifications that are recognised by employers. They show that you are trained to the industry standard. You need to gain Level 3 NVQ/SVQ if you want to progress in the hairdressing or barbering industry.

What is commission?
?
Page 11
Commission is something that hairdressers may earn on top of their wages. It is usually performance-related and is individual to each salon. You may earn commission on the amount of products you sell each week, and a proportion of the income from the number of clients you have.
Earning potential
There is really no cap on what you could earn. It all depends on how hard you want to work. The skys the limit once you have completed your training. Its all about how ambitious you are and how far you push yourself. There are lots of opportunities in the world of hairdressing.

Other options
Many people in hairdressing also go on to work in sales, marketing, public relations and photography, whilst others choose to concentrate on the business aspects of running a salon rather than working behind a chair. Finally, if you have enough experience, you can choose to go into education, working as a trainer or lecturer to pass on your knowledge and skills.
Page 15
Hairdressing overload
Rather than trying to be all things to all people, you can specialise in the qualifications you do. For instance, you may choose to specialise in barbering, African type hair, colouring, long hair or hair extensions.
Further guidance can be found on skin care and glove use at: http://hse.gov.uk/skin/information.htm

Hairdressing involves a lot of time standing. It is important to wear a comfortable, full shoe to help prevent aching legs, sore feet and avoid any risk of injury from sharp tools such as se shoes a T he re scissors. Open-toed shoes are not recommended; hair clippings can get under the skin and cause irritation or infection.

Through bad posture, there is also a risk of long-term problems to the neck, shoulders and back. To help avoid this happening, stand with your legs straight and feet slightly apart to maintain even balance of your weight.
