ESSAY ON ETHICS OF AI IN WARFARE

The Ethics of AI in WARFARE

The definition of AI can explain how it has become embedded in numerous aspects of
contemporary society but perhaps none of its uses is as debated as its use in the military. This

means that, as we consider the increasing incorporation of AI components into military systems,

there are a number of ethical dilemmas that humanity faces. These questions raise issues about

war, personal accountability, and the effect that delegating fatal choices to machines or systems

would have. In this essay, I will explore the ethical implications of AI in warfare, focusing on three
primary areas: the ethics of AI as subjects and objects of moral responsibility, the consequences

of embedding AI in armed conflict, and the possibility of redefining war with the help of AI.

MORAL AGENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN AI WARFARE

Thus, there is another essential ethical question concerning the cost of life and decision criterion

during war, which simplifies the process of war execution for governments with the use of AI.
Autonomous weapons, are capable to perform task on their own, free from human control, and AI

systems in general are going to ensure that the wars would be very efficient without human

soldiers on the front lines. At first glance this could be seen as a positive thing, a reduction in

human personnel actually on the ground and in direct danger of combat. However, there are

several significant ethical questions that warrant how this technology can erase the humanity in a
conflict and lower the mental and ethical walls to engaging in violence. One of those principles has

to do with the justifiability of war referred to as jus ad bellum. One is the condition that states war

should only be declared after all the other viable options have been used. The point of triggering a

war may be more easily crossed if systems aided by AI, specifically systems may not require

human soldiers to make decisions are used. The political leaders might be willing to go to war if
they think that war can be fought without cost in terms of lives, at least not on their side, again,

this use of AI in war making, destabilizes values of other human life, especially if the one side is

using autonomous machines while the other side has human mercenaries. The more such

machines are regarded as easily disposable items used to fight wars, then human lives especially

of the adversary or the innocent people in the war intensified environment will most probably be
looked at also in the same way. This increased remoteness from the actual conflict, afforded by AI,

could undermine the normal feeling of moral culpability felt by officers choosing to employ force

resulting in death.

THE HUMAN COST OF AI IN WARFARE

Loss of Human Control: The use of robots will eliminate humans from the process of making

critical decisions regarding life and death.Errosions of Target Discrimination: AI technologies may

fail to correctly identify between military and civilian targets due to bias in data sets or errors in
data entry.Creation of Conflict Surgical Strike Missions: The speed at which AI technologies work

provide minimal time to diplomatic negotiation propelling.

The Use AI Will Revolutionize Warfare

Aside from questions of responsibility and, importantly, human lives, the introduction of AI in

warfare poses the question of what warfare itself will look like moving forward. This
transformation brings into play other considerations that are related but go beyond the singularity

of applying AI on the field of war.

First, AI can enhance the speed and efficiency of warfare, but this also makes new threats

possible. Among the concerns for incorporating AI in conflicts is the risk of escalation because of

efficiency offered by an AI network. Some AI can decide much more quickly than humans and
therefore set in motion sequences of actions that would quickly spiral out of control. For instance,

if one side creates an AI system that will automatically respond to threats, while the other side has

the same AI system, it could end up in a cycle of exchanges without intervention, leading to

serious consequences and even war. This scenario brings out an ethical issue of principally

audacious relinquishment of patronage of crucial decisions most importantly the deadly power.

Second, the application of AI in warfare may result in the emergence of standoff weapons in wars

which use such methods as the destruction of enemy systems or the penetration into the

management systems of the military. Since traditional warfare has certain rules and boundaries

framed by International laws, the area of Cyber warfare is relatively unknown. Ethical

considerations arise concerning the use of AI tools in cyber warfare because these attacks are
potentially catastrophic to plane targets, civil populations, structures such as power systems,

hospitals, and communication systems.

Last but not the least, application of AI in warfare leads to a new form of warfare arms race, where

every nation wants to develop better and more advanced automatous weapons.

International Law and the Profession’s Ethical Code

Due to the numerous ethical concerns that surround the use of AI in warfare, there are high

proportions that require international law principles, and a code of ethics in the use of the

pertinent technologies. International legal instruments like the Geneva Conventions, in force today,

will not be enough for addressing problems arising from the deployment of AI in armed conflict.

For example, the laws of war assume that combatants must be able to differentiate military
objectives from noncombatants one which can be challenging for AI.
