The purpose is to observe and compare experimental and theoretical values obtained from
the oscilloscope in an RC, LR, and RLC circuit. Begin by setting up and calibrating the
oscilloscope with the function generator in an RC circuit. Once calibrated and the theoretical
values are the same as experimental values read by the oscilloscope then you can begin to build
the circuits. Construct an RC circuit with channel one of the oscilloscope across the voltage
source (function generator) and channel two across the resistor. Once set up, calibrate to see a
clean sign wave on the oscilloscope. Record the values of Vmax, Vr, period T, and time t.
Calculate the phase difference with recorded values. Repeat this same procedure for RL and RLC
circuits with channel one across the voltage source and channel two across the resistor. Record
the same values but for the different circuits. Data analysis shows that in the RC Circuit the
current was lagging the voltage, and the percent difference between values for the total
impedance (Z) and phase difference (Phi) were >2.0% for both. This trend of being >2.0%
percent difference between experimental and theoretical values held true for all circuits. In the
RL Circuit the current was leading the voltage. While examining the RLC Circuit, it was
determined that increasing the driving frequency resulted in shorter waves and subsequently a
shorter period, while decreasing the driving frequency resulted in a longer period as the waves
stretched. Possible errors while observing the oscilloscope would come from human error when
deciding a number to use for calculations in the equations. Another error during the experiment
would be the hertz value slightly shifting between the desired values, leaving small amounts of
error on the oscilloscope, but negligible. The theoretical and experimental values from the
oscilloscope throughout all three circuits were within marginal percent errors, suggesting that the
results attained are replicable and accurate.
