Assignment 7: Fourier Series

1. Draw the following periodic functions of period 2π and obtain the Fourier series:
(i) (
− cos x if −π ≤ x < 0
f (x) =
cos x if 0 ≤ x ≤ π.

(ii) (
−k if −π < x < 0
f (x) =
k if 0 < x < π.

(iii) (
π(1 + x) if −π ≤ x < 0
f (x) =
π(1 − x) if 0 ≤ x ≤ π.

2. Obtain the Fourier series of the following functions:

(i) (
−k if −2 < x < 0
f (x) =
k if 0 < x < 2,
and f (x + 4) = f (x).
(ii) f (x) = 9 − x2 for −3 < x < 3 and f (x + 6) = f (x).
(iii) f (x) = |x| for −π < x < π and f (x + 2π) = f (x).
(iv) f (x) = 2x2 + 4x for −2 < x < 2 and f (x + 4) = f (x).

3. (i) Obtain the half range Fourier cosine series for f (x) = x sin x in 0 < x < π. Hence show

(iii) Show that x(π − x) = π8 (sin x + 1

sin 5x + · · · ), 0 < x < π.
(iv) Find the Fourier cosine and sine series of the function f (x) = x for 0 ≤ x ≤ π.

4. Obtain the complex form of the Fourier series:

(i) f (x) = e−x in −1 ≤ x ≤ 1.
(ii) f (x) = x for −π ≤ x ≤ π.

5. Find the Fourier series expansion of the function f (x) = x2 , −2 ≤ x ≤ 2.

P∞ (−1)n+1
Then prove the following: (i) π6 = ∞
2 P 1 π2
1 n2 , (ii) 12 = 1 n2
.

6. Verify whether there exist a function f (x) on [−π, π] such that its Fourier series is sin x +
sin 2x + sin 3x + . . . + sin nx · · · .
7. If f (x) = [x], 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 is the greatest integer value function and g(x) = 2 sin x, 0 ≤ x ≤ π,
then find the sum of the Fourier series of f (g(x)), 0 ≤ x ≤ π for all x ∈ [0, π].
