Key concepts
Hook A memorable part of a song, often repeated, that grabs your attention and is easy to remember.
Motif A short fragment of music, made up out of only a few notes, like a musical building block.
Part A part is the sheet music for one instrument or one voice.
Chorus A part of a song in which the lyrics and the melody stay the same.
Theme A recognizable melody that is repeated and varied. It is a fundamental musical idea that is developed,
repeated, and recurs throughout (a part of) the musical piece.
Second voice A secondary melody that moves along with the main melody, but in a different pitch.
Instruments
Acoustic guitar An acoustic guitar is made of wood, has six strings made of nylon or stleel, a
hollow sound body and a neck with frets on it. Frets are strips. attached to
the neck of a guitar. In Clips 3 and 4 you see and hear a guitar being plucked.
Electric guitar An electric guitar has steel strings and a solid wooden body. There are also
electric guitars with a hollow body.
Piano A piano is a percussion keyboard instrument. Pressing the keys causes a little

mouthpiece. You can change the pitch by using your lips or pressing the
