Dress Code

Student Handbook
We want every student to feel confident and comfortable in their dance attire. Below you'll find
generalizations that can be modified to achieve this. We generally use standard tight colors that aren't
intended to match any skin-tone, but students are welcome to use skin-tone tights/shoes, if desired.
Students are welcome to follow the dress code they identify with.

GIRLS IN GENERAL
Hair: bun
Leotard: any color/style or a Dance Dress
Tights: pink for ballet, tan for jazz, none for hip hop
Bottoms: any color single-layer skirt or dress for ballet,
any color jazz shorts/pants or leggings for others

BOYS IN GENERAL
Top: any solid color dance shirt with or without sleeves
Bottoms: any color jazz shorts/pants or leggings

ATTIRE TO AVOID
• Puffy tutus (I know they're fun, I'm sorry! They're super distracting, too...)
• Tiaras
• Jeans
• Dirty shoes and street shoes
• Fake ballet slippers (usually have a rubber or cloth bottom or a street shoe bottom instead of leather)
• Basketball shorts (for all except hip-hop)
• Short shorts without tights or leggings underneath
• Warmers and over-shirts that can't come off after warm up
• Sweatpants (except for hip-hop, although still not advised because students get very hot during class)

HIP-HOPPERS
Hair: Pulled back
Top: any color T-Shirt
Bottoms: any color leggings/jazz/stretchy pants or shorts with leggings underneath
Shoes: Starr Sneakers that are NOT worn outside

HAIR
To improve spotting and execution, all students need to wear their hair in a bun or low pony. Other
hairstyles inhibit movement. Students should secure their hair to avoid having to fix or adjust it during
class, as well as, arrive prepared to put their hair in a bun if asked by their instructor.

JEWELRY
For everyone’s protection, students need to remove jewelry before class. Please remove watches, rings, toe
rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings (other than studs). Wearing jewelry while dancing could injure the
student, other students, and the instructor. Jewelry also has a chance of being misplaced at the studio.
Please leave these special belongings at home.

DRESS CODE POLICIES


Students are encouraged to wear appropriate warmers during barre/warm up. Tutus, excessively long
skirts, and jeans are not allowed. Absolutely no inappropriate writing on clothing is allowed in the facility
such as reference to offensive, racist, or suggestive material. Crowns, tiaras, headdresses, and bandannas
are not allowed. Soft headbands and small clips can be worn if they are simple, safe, and not a distraction.

Clothing, including footwear, is subject to differ from those listed for recitals or competitions. For your
convenience, discounted clothing and footwear may be available for purchase through the office.

NAIL POLISH & FAKE FINGERNAILS


Toenail polish and fingernail polish are allowed in classes but not on picture day or rehearsals/recitals. Fake
fingernails are allowed up to 1/4 inch.

FOOTWEAR
To protect your health and dance floor, shoes that have been worn outside are not be allowed in the
classrooms during class or while walking across the floor to the bathrooms/cubbies. We must do our best
to keep them as sanitary as possible. Thank you, in advance, for your understanding regarding this matter.

Dance shoes must be removed before leaving the facility as they should not be worn outside. Practicing at
home in a clean, dry area is encouraged.

Tap shoes should not be worn on pavement, cement, or other harsh materials to avoid scratching taps.
Check the screws often to make sure they are not unscrewing/protruding.

NONCOMPLIANCE POLICY
Depending on the situation, students that do not meet dress code may not be allowed to participate. The
associated fees will not be adjusted/refunded in this instance.
