REAL-WORLD PROBLEM
( World Hunger)

Many of the problems facing humanity are the same recurring challenges that man has tackled

for centuries. Scientific understanding can help battle things like hunger, disease, the need for

raw materials, and pollution have limited humanity since prehistoric times. However, throughout

history the development of new technologies has enabled dramatic improvements in our quality

of life.

The main cause of hunger worldwide is poverty. Millions of people around the world are simply

too poor to be able to buy food. They also lack the resources to grow their own food, such as

arable land and the means to harvest, process, and store food. Another contributing factor is

hunger itself. Although it might seem odd to blame hunger for hunger, it's actually a reflection

of the vicious cycle that hunger causes. When people are undernourished, they tend to be weak

and unhealthy. If hunger makes it hard to grow and learn, it's no surprise when these people

can't rise up to break the cycle of poverty and hunger.

Simply dedicating more land to agriculture is one potential solution, but may result in food

production far from the areas of greatest need. Increases in productivity per acre, drought

resistant crops, and decreases in the need for chemical fertilizers would all go far to sustainably

achieving the food production the world will need, reducing pressure to transform lush forests

into agricultural land.

SOLUTION:

Urban agriculture or commonly known as urban farming, refers to growing plants and rearing

animals that produce food within a city or town. It also comprises processing and then

distributing that produce throughout the city.

Because of the technological upgrade, you can grow food in places where it was previously

difficult or nearly impossible. Urban farms can be either traditional small outdoor community

gardens or modern vertical farms in urban design. These futuristic farms can be designed in

various ways, but most of them have rows of racks lined with plants rooted in nutrient-rich soil,

water or just air.

Producing your own food, growing your own crops and herbs on undeveloped land is one way

that can help the urban poor in earning more money. In fact, urban farmers can trade their

harvest and keep the rest for themselves. Urban Farming is an interesting way to bring people

together, to establish a sense of community among isolated groups of the population. For

example, when the people of the neighborhood, family, friends or sometimes even strangers

when to work together to keep the plants alive in a community garden, it develops a sense of

belongingness in the community. To minimize the carbon footprint of mass production and

distribution, urban farming is a sure shot solution. It also seeks to make nutritious food

affordable and accessible to everyone around.
