Endangered Treasures
We have forests with animals galore,
monkeys, rhinoceros, elephants and boar;
tigers and lions, deer and bear,
Yet some precious animals are sadly rare.

The Bengal florican is a bird black and white,

Speckled with brown, a beautiful sight!
It needs dry grasslands to flourish and thrive,
Without which, it’s hard for this bird to survive.

The rhinoceros with only one sturdy horn,

Is precious and rare like the fabled unicorn!
This wonderful creature had no real support;
It was cruelly hunted by men for their sport.

The great hangul stag is a magnificent beast,

Whose numbers have quickly, terribly decreased;
In the mountains and valleys on grass it grazed,
Till men built their houses and the grass was razed.

The little red panda lives mainly in trees,

Feeding on leaves, it swings in the breeze!
Its long furry tail keeps it cosy and warm,
From the sharp freezing cold of a dark winter storm.

Gentle giant of the sea,

Blue whale swims so wild and free,
In oceans deep, it roams with glee,
A mighty friend for you and me.
Joseph Mathews, Class: IV C

The ostrich roams the great Sahara.

Its mouth is wide, its neck is narrow.
It has such long and lofty legs,
I’m glad it sits to lay its eggs.
Nalini Shankaran, Class: III A

Amidst striped shadows, a resounding plea

Safeguard these realms, each habitat a key.
Protect the Bengal tiger, let its roar resound.
Its survival is a duty profound.
Lovely Motwani, Class: IV E

From one tree to another, it swings and swings and swings

It is as smart as humans, its mind bings and bings!
The men are chopping forests and reducing them to the least,
Soon the orangutans will forever rest in peace.
Aryan Aggarwal, Class: III C

Amidst the Himalayan heights it roams,

Snow leopard where the icy wind combs.
Spotted grace in mountains’ embrace,
A silent dance in nature’s space.
Anshu Arora, Class: VI D

The giant panda is so cute and chubby,

It is fluffier than a new puppy,
It has a thick long coat which is furry,
So, when children want to go to the zoo, they are obviously in a hurry.
Manpreet Singh, Class: VII B

Beneath the moon’s soft silver sheen

Vaquitas glide, a rare ballet unseen.
Echoes of the ocean weave their tale,
In solitude, their gentle spirits prevail.
Adrika Das, Class: VIII D

We can’t afford to lose another,

Mother, father, sister or brother.
Families are dying, can’t you see?
Stop the violence against African elephants, the killing spree!
Harpreet Brar, Class: V D

Help birds play and fly,

On the ground and in the sky.
Help them live their life,
Do not cut their throats with a knife.
Suresh Gopalan, Class: VII C

Way down south in the tropics,

Lived a funny flamingo named Meg,
Who loved to discuss lengthy topics,
While standing quite still on one leg.
Anirudh Sinha, Class: V A

The lion-tailed macaque – named for its tail,

Not for its mane!
The trees that it lived upon,
Are now cut down ruthlessly!
Yansa Yanthan, Class: VIII E

Lion is a sign of passion and strength.

Whenever we are in trouble,
We are told to be a lion and move forward
Unfortunately, lions themselves are fighting for their existence.
Ava Ayrton, Class: V B

The Great Indian bustard struggles to live,

It needs all the help that we can give!
Give them grasslands and food, they’ll be fine,
Or else their biomes will suffer big times!
Amisha Sawant, Class: VI C

The cheetah with solid black spots and pale buff fur,
It can’t roar, though it can purr,
Known as an apex predator, as it tops the food chain,
It’s hard for the prey to escape, as its speed is insane!
Subhas Sengupta, Class: VI A

The life of a shark, is no walk in the park.

Hunted, killed and sold, this tale never gets old.
Killed for their teeth, skin and fins, to be sold as food in tins.
Ocean life is shrinking, humans act without thinking.
Diya Jaiswal, Class: VIII C

The Sea otters hunted for their silk brown furs,

When they’re only meant for spreading love.
Keeping sea urchins in control,
Thus, nature speaks of their vital role.
Saira Khan, Class: IV D

In the African rainforests, dense and grand,

Mountain gorillas roam, a dwindling band;
They walk on their knuckles, nose prints like no other;
Thick fur wraps them, their protective cover!
Ravish Pillai, Class: VII E

We must learn what to do, to build and create

Safe homes for these creatures, before it’s too late!
We must treasure these creatures, that they live and survive,
We must tirelessly work to ensure that they thrive!
