It can lead to serious health issues, including stunted growth, eye problems,
diabetes, and heart disease.
TYPES OF MALNUTRITION

 There are two types of malnutrition

undernutrition malnutrition

overnutrition malnutrition
UNDERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

DEFINITION

The malnutrition cause when we take

less amount of nutrients according
to demand of body
UNDERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

 This can cause ;

 Weight loss
 Loss of fat and muscle mass
 Hollow cheeks and sunken eyes
 A swollen stomach
 Dry hair and skin
 Delayed wound healing
 Fatigue
 Difficulty concentrating
 Irritability
 Depression and anxiety
TYPES OF UNDERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

There are two types of undernutrition malnutrition

 Micro nutrient undernutrition malnutrition

 Macro nutrient under nutrition malnutrition
MICRONUTRIENT UNDERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

Definition:
The demand of body of micronutrient is more but supply is less it is called micronutrient undernutrition malnutrition
Examples :
 Vitamin A: Dry eyes, night blindness, increased risk of infection (6Trusted Source).

 Zinc: Loss of appetite, stunted growth, delayed healing of wounds, hair loss, diarrhea (7Trusted Source).

 Iodine: Enlarged thyroid glands (goiters), decreased production of thyroid hormone, growth and development
issues (9Trusted Source).
MACRONUTRIENT UNDERNUTRTION MALNUTRITION

Definition:
When amount of macronutrient is less in body as compare
to demand of body
Example:
kwashiorkor, a severe protein deficiency,
causes fluid retention and a protruding abdomen
. On the other hand, the condition marasmus,
which results from severe calorie deficiency,
leads to wasting and significant fat and muscle loss (5).
TYPES OF OVERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

➢ There are further two types of overnutrition malnutrition

Micro nutrient overnutrition malnutrition

➢ Macro nutrient overnutrition malnutrition

MICRO NUTRIENT OVERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

 Definition

When amount of micronutrient is more in body as compare

to demand of body
 Example

one study in 285 adolescents found that blood levels of vitamins A and E in
obese people were 2–10% lower than those of normal-weight participants
MACRONUTRIENT OVERNUTRITION MALNUTRITION

 Definition
This occurs when an individual consumes excessive amounts of certain macronutrients, often leading to health
issues.
 Example:
 A person who frequently consumes fast food, sugary beverages, and processed snacks might have an
overabundance of carbohydrates and fats in their diet. This can lead to obesity, insulin resistance, and related
health problems.
CAUSES OF MALNUTRITION

 Inadequate Food Intake

 Poverty
 Food Insecurity:
Poor Dietary Choices
 Lack of Knowledge
 Health Conditions
 Chronic Illnesses
 Age-Related Factors
 Digestive Issues
 Lifestyle Factors
CONSEQUENCES OF MALNUTRITION

Long-Term Health Risks

• Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases
• Higher Mortality Rates
Economic Impact
• Healthcare Costs
• Loss of Income
Psychological Effects
• Mental Health Issue
• Low Energy Levels

Social Consequences
• Reduced Productivity
• Social Isolation
PREVENTION

➢ By taking balance diet

➢ By drinking plenty of water
➢ By Promoting Physical Activity
➢ Ensure regular Health Screenings
➢ Support for Local Farmers
➢ By improving water sanitation infrastructure
TREATMENT

 Four steps to managing malnutrition

 Step 1; identification of malnutrition
 Step2; assessment
 Step 3; management identifying
 Step 4 monitring the intervention
ROLE OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDER

Physician
Diagnose and treat underlying conditions
NURSES

 Monitor progress,
 provide education
COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

Support community
based care
DIETITIAN

 Develop personalized
nutrition plan
SUMMARY
