LEARNING OBJECTIVES

M At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to write about New York City in the year 1900 by
completing correctly at least 6 out of 8 sentences with were or weren’t.

C At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to use capital letters and full stops correctly in writing
at least two sentences about their town in the year 1900.
1. Have pupils talk about their town.
I. PRE-LESSON 2. Prompt questions to encourage active participation. e.g. Are there any
shopping centres? Are there many cars? etc
1. Activity 1:
 Play a True/False game to review the content of the text on Student’s Book
p.78.
 Say a sentence and pupils tell you if it is True or False. Pupils move to the
left if it is true and move to the right if it is false.
 Change the focus to the pupils’ hometown.
e.g. There weren’t any motorbikes in [pupils’ town name] in 1900. / It was
very quiet in [pupils’ town name] in 1900. Use a range of language from
the Grammar Box (Teacher’s Book, p.120).
II. LESSON  Draw attention to the Grammar Box (see Teacher’s Book, p.120) and
DEVELOPMENT review the forms. Include There weren’t any…+ plural.
2. Activity 2:
 Distribute worksheet. Pupils refer to their answers (worksheet from lesson
120) and complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb.
3. Activity 3:
 Play CD track 27 and have pupils listen to what Lucy says.
 Pupils complete the table in pairs.
 Then they use their answers to write two or more sentences. Remind
pupils to take care with punctuation and spelling, and the apostrophe for
n’t in particular. (assessment)
III. POST LESSON 1. Play the Whispers game (Teacher’s Book, p.121, Optional activity).
