Problems – Forces at Angles and Inclines Name _______________________________ Period _____

Draw the FBD with all forces for each scenario. Write the applicable net force equation in each direction.
Forces at Angles
1. A woman pushes a 60 kg lawnmower with a force of 100 N. If the handle of the mower
is 45 degrees above the horizontal, how much downward force is being exerted on the
ground by the mower? What is the normal force? ANS: 658.71 N; 658.71 N

2. A 60 kg wood carving of a gazelle slides under the action of the force shown. What is the
normal force? Assuming the gazelle starts from rest how long will it take Mrs. Burns to
move it 3 meters? ANS: 592.33 N; 12 s

3. Suppose Mrs. Burns pushes the gazelle from the previous problem into the elevator so she can move it to her
classroom. Once in the elevator, she stops pushing on it. What is the new normal force on the gazelle as the elevator
is accelerating upwards at 3 m/s2? ANS: 768 N

4. A 200 N crate of gazelle toys is resting on the floor. If you pull on the crate as shown, what is
the normal force? How fast will the crate be moving after 4 seconds? ANS: 156.70 N; 4.9 m/s

5. A 60 kg gazelle slides with a constant speed of 0.8 m/s under the action of the force as
shown in the picture. What is the normal force? What is the force of friction? What is the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the gazelle and the floor? ANS: 592.33 N; 2.5 N;
0.004

6. A crate of gazelles which has a weight of 400 N is resting on the floor. The coefficient of static friction is 0.5. The
coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.35. (a) What is the maximum force that static friction can provide? (b) If you push
with a horizontal force 100 N greater than the answer for (a), how fast will the crate be moving in 5 seconds? ANS:
200 N; 19.60 m/s

7. When you go to college you need to move a box of books (about gazelles) into your dorm
room. To do so, you attach a rope to the box and pull on it with a force of 100 N at an angle
of 30 degrees. The box of books has a mass of 20 kg, and the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the bottom of the box and the hallway surface is 0.5. What is the normal force?
What is the frictional force? What is the net force? What is the acceleration of the box? ANS:
146 N; 73 N; 13.6 N; 0.68 m/s2
8. Find the mass of the object and the tension in cable 2. ANS: m = 7.96 kg; T2 =
44.93 N

Inclines
9. An 80 kg dog is on a slide that makes an angle of 35° with the horizontal. What is the
normal force acting on the dog? What is the acceleration of the dog? ANS: 642.22 N,
5.62 m/s2

10. A 2 kg snake on an inclined plane accelerates at 4.2 m/s2? What is the angle of the
incline? What normal force acts on the snake? ANS: 25.38°, 17.71 N

11. A crate weighing 2000 N slides down a ramp that makes an angle of 30° above the horizontal. The coefficient of
kinetic friction is 0.3. What is the acceleration of the crate? If the ramp is 10 meters long, how fast will the crate be
moving at the end of the ramp if it started from rest? ANS: 2.35 m/s2; 6.86 m/s

12. A driver is able to coast at constant velocity along a road that slopes
downward at an angle of 10° above the horizontal. What is the
coefficient of kinetic friction? If the car and driver together have a
mass of 1700 kg, find the force required to propel them at a
constant velocity along a level road made of the same material as
the incline. ANS: 0.176; 2937.61 N

13. An 8 kg box is released on a 30° incline and accelerates down the incline at 0.3 m/s2. Find the frictional force and
the coefficient of kinetic friction. ANS: 36.8 N; 0.54
