years’ time? The interest rate is 10,5% per annum, compounded monthly.
(3)
(b) Bontleng received an amount of R300 000 as a gift from her grandfather. She
invests it with the bank at 9% per annum, compounded quarterly. After two years,
she withdraws R120 000 to buy herself a car. Three years later, she withdraws
another R15 000 to furnish her apartment. The bank now increases the interest
rate to 12% per annum compounded monthly. Two years later Bontleng considers
buying herself a small flat. Calculate how much money she can spend.

QUESTION 5
Matthew and Andrew are learners at the same school. Some days they arrive late to
school. The probability that neither of the two will arrive late on any day is 0,7.
(a) Calculate the probability of at least one of the two learners arriving late on a
randomly selected day.
(1)
(b) The probability that Matthew arrives late for school on a randomly selected day is
0,25, while the probability that both of them arrive late for school on that day is
0,15. Calculate the probability that Andrew will arrive late for school on that day.
(3)
(c) The headmaster suspects a link in the lateness of the learners. The headmaster
asks you to determine whether the events of Matthew arriving late for school and
Andrew arriving late for school are statistically independent or not. What will your
response to him be? Show ALL calculations.

QUESTION 10
At the beginning of his post-graduate studies, Adrian decided to take out a bank loan to
fund his studies. He will start repaying this loan when he completes his studies after
2 years. He took out a loan of R80 000 on 1 February 2022 at an interest rate of
8,5% per annum, compounded monthly. He will only make his first payment on the last
day of February 2024 and repay his loan in equal monthly instalments over 3 years.
The bank charges interest at a rate of 8,5% per annum, compounded monthly and this
is fixed for the entire period of the loan.

QUESTION 15
(a) The pattern below represents the Koch snowflake. It starts with an equilateral
triangle (shaded in the figures below) with side lengths of 54 units each. Another
1
equilateral triangle (with a side length of 3 of the length of the previous triangle) is
then added to every side. The process can continue indefinitely as shown in
FIGURE 2 and FIGURE 3.
(1) The process is repeated until FIGURE N is formed. Determine the area of all
the ADDED triangles in FIGURE N.
Hint: Present the sum of the areas of all the added triangles in sigma
notation. Note that this should not include the original shaded triangle.
(4)
(2) Determine the total area (including the original equilateral triangle) of this
snowflake with an infinite number of added triangles.

(b) Nica has come up with a genius theory:
1
= √𝑥 + 1 − √𝑥
√𝑥+√𝑥+1
As well as losing her calculator, she has no idea where to start. She needs help to
find the exact value of the above expression. Using Nica’s theory, show Kelsey
how to find the exact value of the above problem.
