Leadership Self-Assessment
Master’s-prepared nurses play a critical role as leaders in healthcare settings, significantly
impacting patient outcomes, team effectiveness, and the overall quality of care. Their advanced
education equips them with the necessary skills to lead interdisciplinary teams, implement
evidence-based practices, and advocate for patients and staff alike. As healthcare continues to
evolve, the importance of strong nursing leadership becomes even more vital. The purpose of
this paper is to reflect on my personal leadership experience, assess my leadership style, and
evaluate my competencies based on the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL)
Nurse Leader Core Competencies.
Personal Leadership Experience
Throughout my nursing career, I have served in both formal and informal leadership
roles. For instance, I have taken the lead in various quality improvement projects and have often
been the go-to person for guidance within my team. I believe I am an effective leader, as I am
able to foster collaboration and ensure that projects are completed efficiently. However, I
recognize that there are areas where I could improve, particularly in delegating tasks more
effectively. I am fairly comfortable in leadership roles but sometimes find it challenging to assert
authority in difficult situations. This is an area where I continue to work on developing more
confidence.
Leadership Style
The leadership style that best aligns with my philosophy is transformational leadership.
This style resonates with me because it emphasizes the importance of inspiring and motivating
team members to achieve their full potential. Transformational leaders are known for their ability
to create a shared vision and drive positive change within an organization, which aligns with my
goals as a future master's-prepared nurse. I believe that transformational leadership will be
particularly beneficial in my future practice, as it fosters a positive work environment and
encourages continuous learning and improvement (Kelly, 2020).
Leadership Competencies
The AONL Nurse Leader Core Competencies provide a valuable framework for assessing
and developing leadership skills. One competency I consider a strength is communication. I have
always been adept at conveying information clearly and ensuring that everyone on my team is on
the same page. Another strength is my ability to build relationships, which has helped me create
a supportive and collaborative work environment. However, one area where I see a need for
growth is financial management. While I have a basic understanding of budgeting and resource
allocation, I recognize that this is a critical skill for nurse leaders, and I need to further develop
this competency. Another growth area is strategic management, where I need to improve my
ability to plan and implement long-term goals effectively.
3

Strategies
To address these growth opportunities, I plan to adopt three evidence-based strategies.
First, I will seek additional training in financial management, possibly through workshops or
online courses, to strengthen my budgeting and resource allocation skills. Second, I will engage
in mentorship opportunities with experienced nurse leaders who excel in strategic management,
allowing me to learn from their expertise. Finally, I will actively participate in leadership
development programs that focus on strategic thinking and decision-making, ensuring that I am
better equipped to lead my team effectively in the future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my leadership journey as a nurse has been both rewarding and challenging.
By aligning my leadership style with transformational principles and focusing on improving my
competencies in financial and strategic management, I am confident that I will continue to grow
as a leader. The strategies I have outlined will help me achieve these goals and ensure that I am
prepared for the demands of leadership as a master's-prepared nurse.
