1. If the 9th term of an A.P. be zero, then the ratio of its 29th and 19th term is

(A) 1: 2 (B) 2: 1 (C) 1: 3 (D) 3: 1

Ans. (B)

Sol. Given, a9 = 0

⇒ a9 = a + 8 d ⇒ 𝑎 + 8𝑑 = 0 ⇒ 𝑎 = −8𝑑 … …

𝑎29 = 𝑎 + 28𝑑

By (i), we have

⇒ a29 = −8 d + 28 d ⇒ 20 d 𝑎19 = 𝑎 + 18𝑑

By equation (i), we have

a 20 d 2
a19 = −8 d + 18 d ⇒ 10 d ⇒ a29 = 10 d = 1 = 2: 1
19

2. If the sum of n terms of an A.P. is 2n2 + 5n, then the nth term will be

(A) 4n + 3 (B) 4n + 5 (C) 4n + 6 (D) 4n + 7

Ans. (A)

Sol. Given 𝑆𝑛 = 2𝑛2 + 5𝑛

𝑆𝑛−1 = 2(𝑛 − 1)2 + 5(𝑛 − 1) = 2(𝑛2 − 2𝑛 + 1) + 5𝑛 − 5 = 2𝑛2 − 4𝑛 + 2 + 5𝑛 − 5

= 2𝑛2 + 𝑛 − 3

Now, 𝑡𝑛 = 𝑆𝑛 − 𝑆𝑛−1 = 2𝑛2 + 5𝑛 − (2𝑛2 + 𝑛 − 3) = 2𝑛2 + 5𝑛 − 2𝑛2 − 𝑛 + 3 = 4𝑛 + 3

3. How many terms of series 54 + 51 + 48 + 45 + ⋯. must be taken to make sum 513

(A) n = 17 or 18 (B) n = 15 or 16 (C) n = 18 or 19 (D) n = 19 or 20

Ans. (C)

Sol. ∵ a = 54, d = −3 and S_n = 513

⇒ 𝑛2 − 37𝑛 + 342 = 0
⇒ (𝑛 − 18)(𝑛 − 19) = 0 ⇒ 𝑛 = 18 or 19

Here, the common difference is negative, So, 19 th term is a19 = 54 + (19 − 1) × −3 = 0.

Thus, the sum of 18 terms as well as that of 19 terms is 513

(A) 95th (B) 100th (C) 102th (D) 101th

Ans. (B)

Ans. (D)

Sol. First term a1 = a = 4

Common difference 𝑑 = 9 − 4 = 5

a + (n − 1)d = 104 ⇒ 4 + 5(n − 1) = 104 ⇒ n = 21

7. If the numbers a, b, c, d, e form an A.P., then the value of a − 4b + 6c − 4d + e is-

(A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 0 (D) None of these

Ans. (C)

Sol. a, b, c, d, e are in A.P

∴b=a+D

𝑐 = 𝑎 + 2𝐷

𝑑 = 𝑎 + 3𝐷

𝑒 = 𝑎 + 4𝐷

Here D is the common difference substitute the values of b,c,d and e in the given expression.

𝑎 − 4𝑏 + 6𝑐 − 4𝑑 + 𝑒

= 𝑎 − 4(𝑎 + 𝐷) + 6(𝑎 + 2𝐷) − 4(𝑎 + 3𝐷) + 𝑎 + 4𝐷

= 8𝑎 − 8𝑎 = 0

Sol. Given: Angles of a quadrilateral are in AP with common difference = 10∘ .

Let the required angles be 𝑎, (𝑎 + 10∘ ), (𝑎 + 20∘ ) and (𝑎 + 30∘ ).
Then, 𝑎 + (𝑎 + 10∘ ) + (𝑎 + 20∘ ) + (𝑎 + 30∘ ) = 360∘

⇒ 4a + 60∘ = 360∘

⇒ a = 75∘

So, other angles are

𝑎 + 10∘ = 75∘ + 10∘ = 85∘

𝑎 + 20∘ = 75∘ + 20∘ = 95∘

𝑎 + 30∘ = 75∘ + 30∘ = 105∘

So, Angles of a quadrilateral are 75∘ , 85∘ , 95∘ and 105∘ .

Sum of angles of a quadrilateral = 360∘

Common difference = 10 = 𝑑( say )
If the first number be a, then the next four numbers will be
𝑎, 𝑎 + 10, 𝑎 + 20, 𝑎 + 30
As per definition:

𝑎 + 𝑎 + 10 + 𝑎 + 20 + 𝑎 + 30 = 360∘

4𝑎 + 60 = 360

4𝑎 = 300

or 𝑎 = 75∘
Other angles:

𝑎 + 10 = 75 + 10 = 85

𝑎 + 20 = 75 + 20 = 95

𝑎 + 30 = 75 + 30 = 105

Therefore, Angles are 75∘ , 85∘ , 95∘ , 105∘

10. The sum of three consecutive terms of an increasing A.P. is 51 . If the product of the first and
third of these terms be 273 , then third term is-

Ans. (21)

Sol. Let the three terms in A.P. be a − d, a, a + d.

Sum of the three terms = 3𝑎 = 51

⇒ a = 17

Product of first and third term is (𝑎 − 𝑑)(𝑎 + 𝑑)

⇒ a2 − d2 = 273

⇒ 289 − d2 = 273

⇒ d2 = 16

d takes positive value as it is an increasing A.P.

⇒𝑑=4

⇒ Third term = a + d = 17 + 4 = 21
⇒ Third term = 21
