Objectives:
❏ Formulate working definition for
sound, pitch, frequency and intensity
❏ Explain how sound waves carry
energy from place to place
❏ Differentiate between regular and
irregular vibrations
What is sound?
Sound is a form of energy that travels into
our ears as waves. Sounds are made when
something vibrates.
The can be no sound unless something
vibrates or moves.
Vibration is the rapid back and forth
movement that causes sound.
When we talk or sing, our vocal cords vibrate as the air
passes over them.
Sound can be soft, for example, a whisper; high, for
example a scream; or low , for example, people talking.
Types of vibrations
1. Regular vibrations: produce pleasant sound, for

example; music

2. Irregular vibrations: produce noise. Example of noise

are very loud music, a blender or a lawnmower in

operation.
Keyword vocabulary
❏ Pitch
❏ Frequency
❏ Intensity
What is Pitch?
The pitch of a sound tells us how high or low
the sound is.
For example; a cow makes a low pitched sound,
but a whistle makes a high pitched sound.
Frequency
The frequency of a sound is the speed at
which an object vibrates to make that sound.
The faster the object vibrates, the higher the
frequency.
❏ The faster an object vibrates, the higher
the frequency.
❏ Slow vibrations are called low
frequency.
❏ A low frequency produces a low pitch
❏ A high frequency produces a high pitch
❖ We can change the pitch by changing
the pitch by changing the tightness,
thickness or length of a string.
❖ If you tighten the strings of a guitar, you
increase the pitch.
❖ If you loosen the strings, you lower the
pitch.
❖ Short and thick strings produce the

lowest pitch when plucked.

❖ Long and thin strings produce the

highest pitch when plucked.

Intensity
The loudness or softness of a sound is called
intensity. - the amount energy the sound
produce.
The intensity of a sound is measured in
decibels (dB).
