INSPIRATION:
Saw pictures of rib cage vest and I just thought of making my own version. BUT
instead of just the rib cage, why not add the other anatomical components such
as Spine, Heart, Vessels, Veins, etc.

Measurements:
This vest is made to measure. It should fit snugly to your body
in order for the Ribcage design to have the desired effect. If
the vest is too loose, the ribcage design will sag.

Stitch Tutorials:
How to do a UDC:
Yarn over, go into the next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over pull through two loops. Basically

leave the last two loops for the next step.

How to do a PPS (Paired Puff Stitch):

(Yarn over, go into the next stitch and pull up a loop)*3 (you should have 7 loops on your hook),

yarn over pull through 6 loops (you should now have two loops left, yarn over pull through all

loops, ch1, (Yarn over, pull up a loop into the same stitch)*3 (you should have 7 loops on your

hook), yarn over pull through 6 loops (you should now have two loops left, yarn over pull

through all loops

Let’s Begin!
NOTE: READ CAREFULLY if you need to ch1, ch2, or no ch at all before turning your work.
If turning chain is counted as a stitch, then the first stitch of the row will be skipped.

Waist Ribbing:
Make a chain in multiples of 2 that measures your M2.

Row 1: ch1, skip the first chain from your hook, 1sc in every stitch

Row 2: ch3 (this counts as a stitch), 1dc in every stitch

Row 3: ch1, 1sc in every stitch

Row 4: ch3 (this counts as a stitch), (1fpdc into the dc on Row 2, dc into the

next stitch on Row 3)*repeat until you have 1 stitch left, 1dc

Row 5: ch1, 1sc in every stitch

Row 6: ch3 (this counts as a stitch), 1dc, (1fpdc into the dc on Row 4, dc into the

next stitch on Row 5)*repeat until end

Repeat Rows 3 to 6 until you’ve reached your desired ribbing height, BUT you have to stop on

a SC row (so either a repeat of Row 3 or Row 5, or simply your last row has to be an odd

number).

DO NOT CUT YOUR YARN!! You’ll continue the panel design from here. Only cut your yarn if

you’ll be using another color.

Back Panel: (DO THIS FIRST)
The back panel will be the helpful guide when making the front panel, so it is advised to make
the back first.

RS Row 1: ch1, 1sc in every stitch

Find the middle 12 stitches. Color change to your Bone Color for these 12 stitches.
WS Row 2: ch3 (this counts as a stitch), 1dc in every stitch

Pattern Design starts here. Grab your stitch markers. If you have them in different colors, label
them as Marker A, Marker B, and Marker C.

First, let’s go through the designs of the stitches.

-PPS will be referred as “Vessel”
-4 Cable stitch will be called as “DNA”
-12 Cable stitch will be called as “Spine”
-Chains will be called as “Veins”

-Mark one stitch to side of the middle 12 stitches with Marker A (total of 14 stitches from one
mark to the other). This is where the “Spine” will be.
To the sides after Marker A, mark base of this sequence: skip 3, Marker B, skip 4, Marker C, skip
2, Marker C, (skip 4, Marker B, skip 4, Marker C, skip 2, Marker C)*repeat

Check Picture 1 and 2 for the guide. Orange – Marker A, Blue – Marker B, Green – Marker C.

Pattern Guide:
Marker A: Stitches in between the two markers will be used to make the Spine (12 Cable
Stitch)
Marker B: ONLY the stitch marked will be used to make the Vessel (Paired Puff Stitch)
Marker C: Stitches marked AND those in between will be used to make the DNA (4 Cable
Stitch)
The first and last stitch of the row will be a Vessel (Paired Puff Stitch)
All other stitches will be replaced with Veins (chains).

All our total stitch count will be different, hence there will be some adjustments needed.

Here are the conditions:

Condition A: IF the remaining stitches is EQUAL to 13, make the next DNA and Vessel (skip 4,
DNA, skip 4, Vessel)
Condition B: IF the remaining stitches after the last Marker B are NOT EQUAL to 13, DO NOT
make a DNA. Replace remaining stitches with chains, and the last stitch will be a Vessel.
Condition C: IF the remaining stitch is ONLY ONE, that stitch will be ignored.

Remaining Stitch = counted after every Marker B

Here are picture guides to have a clearer visual: (You may also check Page 19 for the full view)

Time to start decreasing the sides. Since we have different conditions when we made our back

panel, you must follow the step based on which category you fit in:

Panel Decrease Category A: For those that have Condition A or Condition C

Panel Decrease Category B: For those that have Condition B

The idea is to remove the Veins to have the Vessels and DNA side by side.

For those under Condition B, proceed to Page 15.

You decrease based on the remaining stitches (this includes the last PPS) you have MINUS one.

Example: If you had 10 remaining stitches, follow number 9.

In each row, you’ll be reducing the number of chains by the following:

Rows 3 to 5 is Set A, Rows 6 to 8 is Set B. Repeat the set until you’ve reached a just above the
end of your REAL rib cage is or under your chest, BUT end on the Set A. (you can use the back
panel to help. Doesn’t have to be super accurate.)

DO NOT CUT YOUR YARN!!

Side Vessels
Grab your back panel and mark the sides where you stopped your repeat for the front panel.
From there, put another mark on the sides after every 3 rows 5 times (Picture 48-49). This is a
3set PPS.

For the remaining rows, there’s two categories:

The remaining stitches will be completely ignored. Repeat until you’ve reached the decrease

row (same as the back)

Side Vessel Row 1: PPS into the stitch after the ch1 space

Side Vessel Row 2: PPS into the ch1 space

Side Vessel Row 3: PPS into the stitch after the ch1 space

Repeat the Next Row repeat until you’ve reached the last mark you have based on the back

panel guide.

Other side:

Repeat the step above, start by making a slip knot, remove your hook from the slip knot, insert

your hook into the ch1 space of the last PPS, grab the slip knot, ch2, PPS into the ch1 space

NOTE: Make sure you start with the WRONG SIDE for the next row as you ended on a RS in

the last row of the panel.

Side Vessels Category B:

Instead of just the first and last Vessels of the row, you’ll be making the first and second, and

second to last and last.

Next Row: PPS into the ch1 space, chain the amount you need,

PPS into the ch1 space.

The remaining stitches will be completely ignored. Repeat until

you’ve reached the decrease row (same as the back)

Do your decrease row like how you did in your back panel.

Repeat step on the other side.

NOTE: Make sure you start with the WRONG SIDE for the next row as you ended on a RS in

the last row of the panel.

Sternum: (Use your Bone Color)
After you’re done with the sides, you’ll continue working on the Sternum. Ch1 and turn work
at the beginning of each row
NOTE: Make sure you start with the side you’re supposed to do next. If you ended you set
repeat on a WS then your Next Row should be on the RS, and vice versa.

Sternum Row 1: 2dc, ch4, skip the next 3 chains and 1 stitch, make 2dc in the next 2 stitches
(4dc in total), ch4, skip the next 3 chains and 1 stitch, 2dc

Sternum Row 2: 2dc, ch2, skip the 4chains, 2dc in the next 4 stitches (8dc in total), ch2, skip the
4chains, 2dc

through all 5 loops), ch2, decrease the next 4 stitches into one (UDC, UDC, UDC, UDC, Pull
through all 5 loops), ch3, 2dc

Sternum Rows 1 to 3 are considered a set. Repeat until you’ve reached the same number of
rows you did for the side vessels.

For those that want to have a separate color for the heart, follow Picture 51-52:

NOTE: You may notice that the sternum seems shorter than the Side Vessels. This is
completely fine.

This is how your work should look

after Side Vessels and Sternum

For the last chain, instead

of using the Bone color, Before finishing the

Top Design:
You’ll be repeating the pattern of the Bottom Design, but just like the back panel we’ll be
decreasing by removing the first two sets of Veins (or 4chains).

This is regardless which condition you are.

-Have your piece face Wrong-side facing.

-Make a slip knot using your main color. Remove your hook from the slip knot.
-Insert your hook into the ch1 space of the Last Side Vessel PPS, grab the slip knot.

Row 1: PPS in ch1 space, skip the first dc from the fifth rib cage, 4tc, skip the next stitch, (PPS in
the next stitch, ch4, skip the next 5stitches, 4tc, ch4, skip the next 5 stitches)*repeat until you’ve
reached the last PPS before the Sternum, ch3, skip all remaining stitches, 2dc (This is how it
should look: Picture 65), ch4, skip the next 3 chains and 1 stitch, make 2dc in the next 2 stitches
(4dc in total), ch4, skip the next 3 chains and 1 stitch, 2dc, ch3, skip the same amount of remain-

Connecting The Panels:
Try the vest on yourself and see how well it fits you.

-Have your panels on top of each other with the RS facing out. Grab a stitch marker and mark

the last row of the panels BEFORE the decrease.

-Grab your main color and make a slip knot. Remove your hook from the slip knot.

-Insert your hook into the side of the dc of the first row and grab your slip knot (Picture 68)

-Ch1, sl st into the side dc of the first row on the other panel. (Picture 69)

-Ch1, sc into the ch1 space of the next row’s PPS, ch1, sc into the ch1 space of the PPS in the

SAME row on the other side (Picture 70-71 ). Repeat until you’ve reached your mark of the last

row of the panels BEFORE the decrease.

-Ch1, cut off your yarn. Repeat the step on the other side.

READ THIS:
The highlighted “ch1” can be adjusted based on how long
How the stitches
you need the connection to be for it to fit you, especially if should move
you ended up with a smaller panel than intended. You can
make a longer chain (ch2, ch3, ch6, ch8, etc.) BUT remember,
the stitches are a bit stretchy due to the chains in between,
AND you need the vest to fit snuggly to your body or the Rib

71
Cage design will not press on your body to give the effect.

-Grab your darning needle and sew the top of the straps and the sides of the ribbing together.
You can use any type of stitching method you prefer. Some stitching methods look better with
the RS facing out, others with the WS facing out. Adjust based on what you used.

Neckline Ribbing:
Have the piece Right-side facing.
-Grab you ribbing color (or any color you prefer) and make a slip knot. Remove the slip knot
from your hook.
-On the center of the front panel is the two chains in the Heart Stitch or Sternum. Insert your
hook on the left chain (Picture 72) and ch1 (this doesn’t count as a stitch)
-Make a number of chain based on the length on how long you want the ribbing to be (I
recommend it to be long since the neck hole is quite big. For reference I made 8)
-Ch1, skip the first stitch from the hook, 1BLSC in every chain.

Pattern Repeat: Sl st on the the vest, turn work, 1BLSC in every stitch on the ribbing, ch1, turn
work, 1BLSC in every stitch

Here is how the sl st on the vest works:

You’ll be slip stitching based on the design of the stitch (Vessel, Veins, DNA, etc.) Picture 73

Sternum - sl st into the next stitch and three chains, then once you’ve repeated the BLSC step,
sl st into the 2dc
Vessels - sl st into three stitches (two stitches and the ch1 in the middle)
Veins - sl st into all three/four chains
DNA - sl st into all four stitches
Spine - you will divide it by 3 stitches since total is 12. So sl st in every 3 stitches after repeating
the BLSC step. The first and last dc of the Spine, you will sl st those a long with the
previous/next Veins
Straps - (sl st into the ch1 space of the next PPS, ch1, sl st into the ch1 space of the next
PPS)*repeat this step after repeating the BLSC step (Picture 74-77)

from your hook.

-On the center of the sleeve where you made the Connecting of Panels, insert your hook

through the gap and grab your slip knot and ch1 (this does not count as a stitch; Picture 80)
