Introduction

Silicon has been at the heart of electronics since the invention of

transistors.
As the availability of Silicon is decreasing , scientists began
searching for futuristic elements.
This search led us to Molybdenum disulfide.
Its unique properties outperforms silicon.

3 / 16
What is MoS2 ?
A transition metal dichalcogenide which follows chemical formula
MX2.
As the name suggests contains molybdenum and sulphur.
Silvery black solid.
Principal ore - Molybdenite.
Realtively unreactive
Unaffected by diltute acids and oxygen.
In appearence similar to graphite.

Structure of MoS2

Structure of MoS2

Have a layered structure[2]

Molybdenum atoms sanwiched by layers of sulfide atoms[2]
strong covalent bond between Molybdenum and sulfide atoms[2]
Weak Van der Waals force holds layers together[2]
Each molybdenum atom exists at the center of a trigonal prismatic
coordination sphere and is covalently bonded to six sulfide ions.[2]
Each sulfur atom has pyramidal coordination and is bonded to three
molybdenum atoms.[2]

6 / 16
Why MoS2 ?

Most promising alternative to silicon because of its unique

monolayer atomic structure and excellent optoelectronic properties.
Molybdenumm disulfide possesses
Higher generation and recombination rate for hole and electrons and
so high mobility.[2]
High refractive index so it can be used in optoelectronics[2]
High elasticity[2]
Small pretension[2]
Scalability[2]

7 / 16
Can MoS2 outperform Silicon?

Physical limitations does not enable Silicon to scale beyond 10nm.

Low-dimensional materials in general are extremely interesting in
this context.[3]
Molybdenum disulfide become the best alternative by surpassing its
nearby competitor graphene.[3]
Initial studies also indicate that MoS2 has great potential in future
nanoelectronics, sensing, and energy harvesting.[3]
MoS2 preserves all the important properties of silicon with some added
advantages.[3]

8 / 16
Electronic Applications

Molybdenum disulfide has a wide range of applications:-

Field-Effect Transistors[4]
The large direct bandgap
Relatively high carrier mobility.
High Perfomance Photodetectors[4]
Excellent optical and electrical characteristics
Controllable energy band structure.
In Solar Cells[4]
Layered MoS2 has been used as the HTL, ETL, interfacial layer, and
protective layer.

MoS2 in Microelectronics

Reducing the size of transistors allow semiconductor industry to

create more powerful products.
When a transistor is reduced in size, it allows for more transistors to
fit on a single chip which in turn allows for more complex circuits to
be built.
The size of the latest transistors(mainly Silicon) is 10nm, which
makes transistor features on the order of tens of atoms in size.
Recently, a 1nm transistor using molybdenum disulfide but is
difficult to produce.
Created both 10nm and 1nm transistors

Biomedical Applications

Molybdenum disulfide is well known for its biocompatibility and its role in
detecting cancer.
High Perfomance Amorphus MoS2 photodetector[1]
Detection and treatment of many diseases.
Proved in vitro and vivo
Cure of Alzheimer’s disease[1]
Detection of Breast Cancer[1]
Detection of different amino acids.[1]
Detection and cure for tumor cells.[1]
Detection of different diseases in other animals
eg:-Avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus in chicken[1]

Biomedical Applications

Further Applications

Solid Lubricants[3]
Molybdenum disulfide posses low friction due to weak van der Waals
force between layers.
Molybdenum disulfide mixed with graphene to improve stickiness
Catalyst[3]
Catalyst for desulfurization in petrochemistry
Hydrogenation catalyst for organic synthesis.

13 / 16
Conclusion

Molybdenum disulfide is a promising material, because of its

chemical,electrical,and mechanical properties.
It has wide applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and
biosensing.
Further research can create a revolution in coming era.
