and Principles
Purposive Communication

At the end of the lesson, the
students will be able to:

define what communication is;

understand the nature of
communication;
explain the importance of
effective communication in
personal life.
What is Communication?
it came from the Latin word “communicare”, meaning, to share
or to make common.
is the exchange of information from one person to another.
it aims to express or send a thought or message to a single person,
a small group, a big audience, or the mass.
Nature of Communication
Genina’s boss asked her to represent the company at a promotional
event sponsored by one of their suppliers. She was very nervous
because it would be her first time to attend an event alone. She
reached the venue earlier than expected. She was already feeling
uncomfortable because she cannot find anybody she knows. A few
more minutes passed and she saw someone familiar across the room.
It was Geannie, her college friend. Genina pulled a big smile on her
face and she started waving at Geannie. Seeing and recognizing her,
Geannie smiled and waved back. Genina hastened to Geannie and
they started talking to each other.
The first person we would
like to talk to is usually the
closest person we know.
WHY?
Proxemics

Proxemics would tell us that we tend to have a closer

gravity pull to people we are comfortable with in a
personal or intimate manner
The principle of proxemics would also alter our body
language and facial expression.
Genina’s situation is an
example of the two-way
process of communication
Communication is a continuing process.
It may be formal or informal.
Most part of the communication process is
done in a non-verbal manner rather than in
verbal one.
It can be personal or impersonal.
Nature of Communication
Zeke found out that the sales of the company has gone down for
the past two months. He needs to report this to his boss
immediately. On his way to his boss’ office, Zeke saw his boss
furiously talking to his secretary. When his boss entered his office,
he slammed the door. Zeke, knowing that there is a big chance
his boss would get angry at him, still submitted the sales report.
