1 Introduction 1
1. Introduction
Following the advent of the new Ethiopian Education and Training Roadmap, career and
technical education (CTE) has evolved as a field in transition. It predominantly focuses on
preparing students for work, life, further education as well as employment.
The aim of CTE is to provide Grades 11 and 12 students the chance to develop skills and get
training that will provide access to “Level One” jobs, while also meeting employers’ demands
for qualified worker. The aim is in harmony with the principles, values and philosophies
indicated in this framework. Furthermore, CTE also aims to provide students of Grades11 and 12
with the academic and technical skills, knowledge, and training necessary to succeed in future
careers and to become lifelong learners.
This CTE framework culminates in training category and occupations. All in all there are eight
training categories, namely, manufacturing, construction, Information Technology, agriculture
and health sciences, which are joined by natural science stream students whereas as the other
three streams first language and social science, business sciences and performing and visual arts.
Each of the training categories are inclusive of specific occupations, which individual
students/trainees choose as their career pathways.
The curriculum framework should indicate the weight and emphasis to be laid on each of the
Career pathway by assigning learning time in terms of periods and hours of learning and
training in a week and year. Every year, schooling at all levels begins on the first week of
September and ends on the fourth week of June. Learning and training time for all levels will
be 10 months or 35 weeks. In level 1 Career and Technical Education each career pathway has
10 periods per week and 350 periods in a year. All career pathways will carry equal amount of
time. There will be two semesters in between which is found a one-week break, On the
average, the number of school days is 175. The first semester has 88 days while the second has
87 days. Schools operate on a full-day for Grade 11 and 12.
Therefore, to implement the above career pathways with schedule time, there should be a
document called competence and content flowchart to develop a syllabus and teaching, learning

and training material part by part. This competency and content flowchart is used to develop
syllabus. The competency and content flowchart has four sections. These are introduction, career
pathway description, competency flowchart and Competency, Outcome and Content Flowchart.
In this Competency and content flowchart competencies are identified and arranged from simple
to complex for each career pathways.
2. Pathway Description
Woodworking Technology is a branch of technology that emphasizes a combination of
introductory and advanced machine operations for furniture manufacturing. Woodworking is the
skill of making items from wood and includes joinery, cabinet making and carpentry. It is an
industry that plays a significant role in the Ethiopian economy. The wood and related materials
manufacturing sector has been improved through innovations and research. A pathway
description serves to explain the pathway’s purpose and provides an overview of the main topics
covered, the skills and knowledge that will be acquired, and how the pathway will benefit the
country and student. This CTE training in the wood product production area is designed to
incorporate the knowledge, skill, and attitude of the trainees of Grade 11 & 12 students to apply
various types of wood and related materials product manufacturing techniques that are used for
the conversion of raw materials into finished wooden products.
Rationale
Wood working career path program is designed to prepare students for careers in wood
processing, furniture manufacturing such as home and office furniture, cabinet making, assemble
Product components.
A student who completed CTE in wood technology training in high school has several
opportunities including creating his/her business, hiring in small, middle, and large industries,
governmental, profit-making, furniture manufacturing, business organization, etc.
