Happiness
2. Eudaimonia
view
1. Hedonistic view
Hedonistic view is well-being
the happiness is the polar
opposite of suffering; the
presence of happiness indicates
the absence of pain. Because of
this, hedonists believe that the
purpose of life is to maximize
happiness, which minimizes
misery.
2. Eudaimonia view
HUMAN FLOURISHING

Nicomachean Ethics- discussed that the human flourishing arises

as a result of different components such as:

PHRONESIS FRIENDSHIP WEALTH POWER

Meaning
Phronesis, as Aristotle defined it, is a “state of grasping the truth involving
reason, concerned with action about what is good or bad for a human being”.
Friendship = Aristotle explains that friendship, the mutual admiration between
two human beings, is a necessary condition for the attainment of one's
eudaimonia.
Wealth = an abundance of valuable possessions or money.
Power= is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or
the course of events.
When you achieve these kind of components in the Greek society they believe
that these qualities will bring you happiness which in effect allows them to
partake in the greater notion of what we call the GOOD.

2 Types of
Different
Theories
1. VERIFICATION THEORY
2. FALSIFICATION THEORY
1. Verification Theory
The theory proposes that a discipline is
science if it can be confirmed or
interpreted in the event of an
alternative hypothesis being accepted.

The theory gives premium to

empiricism and only takes into account
those results which are measurable
and experiments which are
repeatable.
Verification theory
Einstein's theory on the existence of
gravitational waves would be
dismissed due to lack of evidence.

American Philosopher Thomas Kuhn

warned us against bridging the gap
between evidence and theory by
attempting to interpret the evidence
according to our own bases.
Verification theory -
example
Verification is an extra or final bit
of proof that establishes
something is true. To verify
something is to make sure it's
correct or true, so verification is
an action that establishes the
truth of something.
Checking an ID is a verification of
your age..
Verification theory
Suppose Lea has a theory that her
classmate Ian likes her. Good, she thought,
I like him too. But how do I know that he
likes me?
-She began by observing him and his
interactions with her. Several gestures she
noted include his always exchanging
pleasantries with her whenever they bump
into each other, his big smile when he sees
her, and greeting her even when riding a
jeepney.
-Through this observations, she was then able
to conclude that Ian does like her because,
she thought, why would anyone do something
like that for a person he does not like?
Verification theory
As it turns out, however, Ian is
generally happy to meet new
people he knew. He has known
Lea since they where in first year
and regards her as generally okay
person. Upon learning that Ian
basically does this to everyone,
Lea was crushed. She vowed to
herself that she would never
assume again.
2. Falsification theory
Asserts that as long as an
ideology is not proven to be
false and can best explain a
phenomenon over alternative
theories, we should accept the
said ideology.
Karl Popper is known proponent
of this view.
Popper suggested that scientific
theories possess potential falsifiers,
and their claims about the world
might later be discovered to be false.
Falsification
theory
Falsification is the act
of deliberately lying
about or
misrepresenting
something.
Falsification
If you write a note to
theory - your teacher excusing
example your absence the day
before and claim it
was written by your
dad, that's
falsification.
Falsification Among other things,
theory - Article 171 provides
example that an act of
falsification is
committed by.
“making untruthful
statement in a
narration of facts” in
a document.
