Caution: Power must be disconnected from the controller before replacing any
hardware other than a power supply or an SFP+ transceiver. In a dual-controller
configuration, this does not require a system outage. In a single-controller
configuration, a system outage is required.
• Know the locations of the equipment power switches and the room's emergency power
switch, disconnection switch, and electrical outlets.
• Do not work alone with high voltage components.
• Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from
electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specifically designed as
electrical insulators.
• The power supply power cords must include grounding prongs and be plugged into
grounded electrical outlets.

Introduction
Warning: To avoid injury, do not attempt to the lift the controller by yourself. Always
get assistance when lifting the controller.
• Keep the area around the chassis clean and free of clutter.
• Place the controller cover and any system components that have been removed away
from the rack or on a table so that they are not in the way of foot traffic.
• While working on the controller, do not wear loose clothing, such as neckties and
unbuttoned shirt sleeves, that can come into contact with electrical circuits or be pulled
into a cooling fan.
• Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body. Metal is an excellent conductor
that can create short circuits and harm you if it comes into contact with printed circuit
boards or areas where power is present.
• When you are finished accessing the inside of the controller, close the cover and secure
it in place. Then install the controller in the rack and secure it with the retention screws

Caution: To prevent damage to the controller, do not use excessive force when
inserting the SFP+ transceiver.
5 Reconnect cables to the SFP+ transceiver. Position cables so that the key (the ridge on
one side of the cable connector) is aligned with the slot in the SFP+ transceiver. Insert
cables into the SFP+ transceiver until the latching mechanism clicks.
Cables are keyed so that they can be inserted in only one way. If a cable does not slide
in easily, ensure that it is correctly oriented.

Replacing IO Cards
Disconnect power from the controller before replacing circuit cards. In a dual-controller
configuration, you do not need to take a system outage. In a single-controller configuration,
a system outage is required. Plan to do this procedure during a maintenance window.
When exchanging IO cards of exactly the same card model and number of ports into the
same slot on the controller, no re-configuration is necessary. However, when replacing a
card with a different type of card, run the IO Card Change wizard after installing the new
card.

Upgrading Memory
Upgrading Memory
Note: Storage Center version 6.0 supports up to 12 GB of memory in the controller.
Upgrades are available to increase memory from 6 GB to 12 GB in existing
controllers. If the controller already has 12 GB of memory, you cannot add more
memory modules.
Disconnect power from the controller before replacing or inserting a memory module. In a
dual-controller Storage Center configuration, you do not need to take a system outage. In
a single-controller configuration, a system outage is required. Plan to do this procedure
during a maintenance window.
1 Record cable locations (page 7).
2 Shut down the controller and slide it out of the rack (page 8).
3 Remove the top cover (page 8).
4 Locate the memory slots. Upgrade modules will be inserted in the black connectors.
6 Align the memory module slot with the connector slot and insert the module into the
connector.

Replacing an SSD Tray Assembly
Note: The SSD Assembly in the CT-SC040 Controller is not compatible with the
compact flash cards used in earlier controllers.
You must have the following items, and information provided by Copilot Services or read
from the system, before attempting a SSD tray replacement:
• Replacement SSD Tray Assembly.
• Appropriate maintenance CD matching the version of Storage Center OS on the failed
SSD. Dell Technical Support Services will provide the ISO image that must be used to
create a local version of the CD.
• Laptop computer that can connect to the controller’s serial port.
• The HSN, SSN, and IP subnet and gateway values for Eth0 and Eth1 for both controllers
(this includes DNS and domain name). This is retrieved from the System Manager or
using a laptop computer connected to the controller through the serial port. Instructions
for retrieving this information is given later in this procedure.
Overview
Replacing an SSD Tray card in a controller consists of the following steps:
1 Retrieve configuration information from the controller.
2 Replace SSD Tray Assembly.
3 Install Storage Center OS onto the new SSD.
4 Configure the SSD.
5 Verify the configuration.

Configure SSD
Configuring the SSD is slightly different for single-controller and dual-controller Storage
Centers.
Caution: Follow these instructions precisely to avoid having duplicate World Wide
Names (WWNs). If there is any confusion regarding these instructions, contact Dell
Technical Support Services.
Note: The controller will reboot during this process, which takes from seven to eight
minutes each time.
1 Run the following CLI commands to enter the HSN recorded in Table 3 on page 22:
shellaccess developer
platform init hsn set <HardwareSN>
platform init ssn set 8
Note: The SSN numbered entered can be any number that is not used by an
existing Storage Center. After the controller is restarted, the system obtains the
correct SSN from the Bootconfig file and writes the SSN to the controller. This
procedure uses the number 8 since SSNs are not typically single digit values.
