Introduction
The Storage Center CT-SC040 Controller FRU Replacement Procedures provide
instructions for replacing components inside the controller that are designated as field-
replaceable. This document assumes the installer has already received and is ready to
install the appropriate replacement part in the CT-SC040 Controller.

Audience
This document is intended for certified business partners and Dell Compellent installers
who perform hardware and software installations. The intended reader has a working
knowledge of storage concepts and has successfully completed Dell Compellent
installation training.

Related Publications
The following documents contain additional information about configuring and using the
Storage Center:
• Storage Center Connectivity Guide
Provides hardware information and cabling instructions for Storage Center controllers,
switches, and enclosures.
• Storage Center System Manager Administrator’s Guide
Describes the Storage Center System Manager software that manages an individual
Storage Center.
• Storage Center Maintenance CD User Guide
Describes how to install Storage Center software on Storage Center controllers.
Installing Storage Center software using the Storage Center Maintenance CD is
intended for use only by sites that cannot update Storage Center using the standard
update options available through the Storage Center System Manager.

Caution: Power must be disconnected from the controller before replacing any
hardware other than a power supply or an SFP+ transceiver. In a dual-controller
configuration, this does not require a system outage. In a single-controller
configuration, a system outage is required.

Electrical Safety Precautions

Warning: Disconnect power from the enclosure when removing or installing

components that are not hot-swappable. When disconnecting power, first shut down
the controller using the Storage Center System Manager and then unplug the power
cords from all the power supply/cooling fan modules in the controller.

• Know the locations of the equipment power switches and the room's emergency power
switch, disconnection switch, and electrical outlets.
• Do not work alone with high voltage components.
• Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from
electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specifically designed as
electrical insulators.
• The power supply power cords must include grounding prongs and be plugged into
grounded electrical outlets.

Introduction

General Safety Precautions

Warning: To avoid injury, do not attempt to the lift the controller by yourself. Always
get assistance when lifting the controller.

• Keep the area around the chassis clean and free of clutter.
• Place the controller cover and any system components that have been removed away
from the rack or on a table so that they are not in the way of foot traffic.
• While working on the controller, do not wear loose clothing, such as neckties and
unbuttoned shirt sleeves, that can come into contact with electrical circuits or be pulled
into a cooling fan.
• Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body. Metal is an excellent conductor
that can create short circuits and harm you if it comes into contact with printed circuit
boards or areas where power is present.
• When you are finished accessing the inside of the controller, close the cover and secure
it in place. Then install the controller in the rack and secure it with the retention screws

Electrostatic Discharge Precautions

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is generated by two objects with different electrical charges
coming into contact with each other. The resulting electrical discharge can damage
electronic components and printed circuit boards. Follow these guidelines to protect your
equipment from ESD:
• It is recommended that you always use a static mat and static strap while working on
components in the interior of the controller.
• Observe all conventional ESD precautions when handling plug-in modules and
components.
• Use a suitable ESD wrist or ankle strap.
• Avoid contact with backplane components and module connectors.
• Keep all components and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in their antistatic bags until
ready for use.

Replacing the Power Supply

Replacing the Power Supply

Each CT-SC040 Controller contains two high-efficiency hot-swappable power supplies.
Either power supply can be removed and replaced without shutting down the controller. In
the event of a power supply failure, the controller disables the internal Cache function as a
preventive measure to avoid data loss.

Identify the Failed Power Supply

If a power supply fails, the Power Fail LED on the controller front panel flashes.

Figure 1. Power Fail LED

You can also use the Storage Center System Manager to identify the failed power supply:
1 Expand the Controllers entry in the Storage Center tree.
2 Expand the failed Controller entry.
3 Click Power Supplies. The status of each power supply is displayed as shown in
Figure 2.
4 To see the location of the failed power supply, click on the failed Controller entry, and
click the Back button.
For the CT-SC040 Controller, the power supply on top is identified as A, the power
supply in the middle slot is identified as B (see Figure 2).

3 Position the replacement SFP+ transceiver so that the key is oriented correctly to the
port.
4 Insert the SFP+ transceiver into the port until it is fully seated and the latching
mechanism clicks.
SFP+ transceivers are keyed so that they can only be inserted with the correct
orientation. If an SFP+ transceiver does not slide in easily, ensure that it is correctly
oriented.

Caution: To prevent damage to the controller, do not use excessive force when
inserting the SFP+ transceiver.

5 Reconnect cables to the SFP+ transceiver. Position cables so that the key (the ridge on
one side of the cable connector) is aligned with the slot in the SFP+ transceiver. Insert
cables into the SFP+ transceiver until the latching mechanism clicks.
Cables are keyed so that they can be inserted in only one way. If a cable does not slide
in easily, ensure that it is correctly oriented.

Install Storage Center OS

Replacement SD cards are shipped without the Storage Center Operating System firmware
installed.
1 Contact Dell Technical Support Services to obtain the appropriate ISO image matching
the version of Storage Center OS on the failed SD card.
2 Install the firmware on the replacement SD card using the instructions in Storage Center
Maintenance CD Instructions.

Configure SSD
Configuring the SSD is slightly different for single-controller and dual-controller Storage
Centers.

Configure a Dual-Controller Storage Center

The following procedure is for dual-controller Storage Centers. For single-controller
configurations, see page 27.

Caution: Follow these instructions precisely to avoid having duplicate World Wide
Names (WWNs). If there is any confusion regarding these instructions, contact Dell
Technical Support Services.

Note: The controller will reboot during this process, which takes from seven to eight
minutes each time.

1 Run the following CLI commands to enter the HSN recorded in Table 3 on page 22:
shellaccess developer
platform init hsn set <HardwareSN>
platform init ssn set 8

Note: The SSN numbered entered can be any number that is not used by an
existing Storage Center. After the controller is restarted, the system obtains the
correct SSN from the Bootconfig file and writes the SSN to the controller. This
procedure uses the number 8 since SSNs are not typically single digit values.

2 Run the following command:

platform init show
Make sure that the serial numbers are as expected.
3 Run the following commands:
cs purge all
-reset
4 Wait for the180-second countdown. After the controller is finished booting, run the
following command:
controller show
Verify that the hexadecimal values in the HardwareSN and SystemSN columns match
the values entered previously. IP settings may not be as expected. Correct IP settings
will be updated from the Bootconfig file when the controller restarts.

Dell Compellent 25

5 Press the power button to turn on the controller and wait for the 180-second countdown
to finish. When the controller has fully restarted, the following message should appear
on the terminal:
A configuration was not found on the flash. Backups are stored on the
disk. Would you like to restore the flash from disk?
Respond Yes to this prompt by running the following command:
question answer 2
This will accept the configuration and the controller will reboot.

Note: If the question prompt does not appear after 1–2 minutes, you must reload
the flash using the following commands:
disk show (verify that the disks show up as ManagedForeign)
shellaccess developer
cs reloadflash

When prompted, Respond Yes as described in Step 5 above, if no prompt appears,

proceed to Step 6.

Caution: You must either restore or reload the flash, if you don’t, the controller will
come up as a new system. If you then manage a disk, data will be lost.

6 Proceed to Verify Configuration on page 28.

the previous step:
platform init show
3 Controller firmware must be the latest version. Confirm the firmware is at the latest
version by running the command:
controller version
4 Run the following commands:
cs purge all
-reset
5 Wait for the 180-second countdown. After the controller is finished booting, run the
following command:

displays the local port condition as unbalanced.
b Right-click the Controller icon in the System Tree.
c From the shortcut menu, select Rebalance Local Ports.
4 For a single-controller installation, restart the servers and make sure the volumes
appear in the System Tree.
5 When the system has been checked and verified by a Dell Technical Support Services,
perform a manual Phone Home of the system to document the update:
a From the Storage Management menu, choose System→ Phone Home→ Phone
Home.
b The system displays previous Phone Home events.
c Click Phone Home Now.
d Click OK in the Phone Home Started window.
The Phone Home wizard displays the status of each item that is being phoned home.
Items that are being phoned home will have a State of In Progress. Once
completed, this State will change to Success if the phone home has completed
successfully, or Failure if the phone home could not be completed.
e When all items have been sent successfully, click Close.
