I. Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to attain atleast 75%
level of proficiency to:

 Analyze the elements of East Asian Music;


 Appreciate the East Asian Music through creative drawing of the 5
instruments of the Pinpeat ensemble, and;
 Listen perceptively to the East Asian musical ensemble.

Topic: Southeast Asian Music (Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos,


Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines)

1. Motivation
Welcome to Grade 8 class! In
this quarter, we will discuss
about the Southeast Asian
Music. Before we proceed, may I
ask if you are familiar with the
countries in Southeast Asia? Yes ma’am.

That’s good! Then, what are the


countries in Southeast Asia? Cambodia
Indonesia
Myanmar
Laos
Malaysia
Thailand
Vietnam
Singapore
Philippines
Brunei
East Timor

Very good class! We will just


focus on the music of some of
those countries in Southeast
Asia. Who among you wants to Student’s answer may vary.
travel in different countries

They say, if you want to travel to
a foreign country, you must
know the country’s culture first
to help you to adopt and cope to
that country. And part of their
culture is their music. So, this is
your chance to know Southeast
Asian Music better in case you
travel there someday.
For now, let us travel and
explore the Southeast Asian
music through our lessons.

2. Lesson Proper
Alright! Let’s have a quick
glance of this country. Cambodia
is also known as Kampuchea
before they renamed this
country in 1991 as Cambodia.
People there are called Khmer or
Cambodian.
Cambodia is a leading country in
Southeast Asia for 600 years and
their music gained world-wide
reputation since 1960 until the
dramatic political problem.

The art music of Cambodia is


highly influence by the ancient
forms as well as Hindu forms.

Their court music is roughly


similar to that Java and
Indonesia. They feature choruses
with large orchestras that is
based on struck keys and gongs.

Cambodian people also adopt


Indian, Chinese, European and
other cultures to suit their own
traditions and tastes that
resulted in a distinctive quality
of Cambodian culture.

This is the Pinpeat. It is musical


ensemble in Cambodia. It is an
orchestra that accompanies
ceremonial music.

Pinpeat ensemble of Thailand Student’s answer may vary.
and usually consist of 9 or 10
instruments.
You will get to know more about
Pinpeat later. For now, you will
watch a short clip about the
Pinpeat.
