Power electronic converters and PV systems

1. The output DC voltage Vo of a step-down (buck) converter is maintained at 5V by

controlling the duty cycle D. The input dc voltage Vd to the converter varies in the range of
10 - 40 V. The switching frequency fs of the converter is 20 kHz. The minimum load
current, Io, of the converter is 1A. Assuming ideal devices and components,

(i) find the minimum inductance required for operation of the converter in
continuous-conduction mode.

[L = 109.3 µH]

The converter operates with a DC input voltage of Vd = 12.6V. It delivers 10A DC to the
load.

(ii) Find the maximum and minimum inductor currents.

=[ I L max 10.69
= A, I L min 9.31A ]

(iii) Obtain the filter capacitance C required to keep the output voltage ripple factor
∆Vo
≤ 1%.
Vo
[C = 172 µF]

2. The output DC voltage Vo of a boost (step-up) converter is maintained at 24 V by controlling

the duty cycle D. The input DC voltage Vd to the converter varies in the range of 8 – 16 V.
The switching frequency fs of the converter is 20 kHz. The maximum load of the converter
is 5 W. Assuming ideal devices and components,

(i) find the inductance L required for operation of the converter in discontinuous-
conduction mode up to the maximum load.
[L = 213 µH]

The boost converter operates with a DC input voltage of Vd = 12V. The load current
supplied by the converter is 0.75 A.

(ii) Find the maximum and minimum inductor currents.

[iLmax = 2.2042A, iLmin = 0.7958A ]

∆Vo
(iii) Obtain the filter capacitance C required to keep the output voltage ripple ≤
Vo
1%.
[C = 78.1 µF]

3. A PV module is made up of 36 identical cells, all wired in series. Each cell has short circuit
current Isc =3.4A and at 25° C its reverse saturation current I0 =6×10-10A. The equivalent
parallel resistance Rp =6.6 Ω and series resistance Rs=0.005Ω. Find the voltage, current and
power delivered to load when the junction voltage of each cell is 0.5V.

4. Under certain ambient conditions a PV module has its maximum power point at Vm =17V
and Im=6A. What duty cycle should an MPPT controlled DC-DC converter has if the module
is delivering power to a 10 Ω resistance?

5. An H-bridge inverter is required to interface to a 230Vrms, 50Hz grid supply to provide

energy from a renewable source to the grid. It is to deliver 10kW into the grid and will be
switched at 20kHz using PWM. The interfacing inductance is 5mH. Determine:

(i) The minimum Vdc required if the power factor has to be able to vary from 0.95
leading to 0.95 lagging at steady-state.
(ii) If the grid voltage rises by 10%, what is the resulting inverter current if the inverter
is exporting 10kW into the grid at pf=1?
(iii) If the grid voltage falls by 6%, what is the resulting inverter current if the inverter is
exporting 10kW into the grid at pf=1?

6.
