Microwave Vessel Conditioning
Summary Microwave digestion vessels change their properties during their usage. Accordingly, their
microwave absorption characteristics may vary. Most important in this context is, that TFM-
vessels soak up small amounts of acids and nitric oxides (visible as slight yellow discolouring)
which must be evaporated to get again a uniform heating of all vessels.

DAP-60K Berghof Products + Instruments GmbH
Procedure
All microwave vessels are heated at 250°C over night inside a conventional laboratory oven to
evaporate soaked acids and to re-condition the vessels.
The effect on DAP-60+ vessels is illustrated in the figures below by heating 25 ml water in the
microwave oven with the following program.
Temperature Program Step T [°C] Ta [min] Time [min] Power [%]
1 200 10 5 90
2 75 1 10

Note: To avoid foaming and splashing wait until the vessels have cooled to room temperature (about 20 min). Carefully open the digestion vessel in a
fume hood wearing hand, eye and body protection since a large amount of gas will be produced during the digestion process.
