Announcer: Revision 1.
Listen to the conversation about the event ‘Technology Weekend for
Families’ and complete part of the leaflet below.
Tiffany: Welcome back to City Plus. Before the break, I was mentioning a
special event this weekend that may interest you. So, on the phone now
is Mr. Alan Kwok, spokesperson for Hong Kong Technology Society.
Mr. Kwok will tell us a bit more about this special event. Hello Mr.
Kwok.
Mr. Kwok: Good afternoon, Tiffany. And hello everyone!
Tiffany: Mr. Kwok, could you tell us about the special event? What is it called
and is it for everyone?
Mr. Kwok: The event is called ‘Technology Weekend for Families’. And yes, as
the name suggests, it’s suitable for the whole family. It’ll be held this
coming Saturday and Sunday in the Hong Kong Science Park
Exhibition Hall.
Tiffany: The event is about technology … it seems like rather a difficult topic!
Mr. Kwok: No, we make sure that all the activities and exhibitions are family
friendly. All the three main objectives of the event are about families.
Tiffany: a b Very good. So, what are the main objectives?
Mr. Kwok: Well, the first one is to introduce the latest family friendly gadgets and
modern technologies.
Tiffany: So, I presume there will be lots of family friendly gadgets to show
visitors?
Mr. Kwok: Oh yes, and we’ll introduce the latest modern technologies as well,
such as how the GPS system helps locate an item.
Tiffany: Sounds exciting!
Mr. Kwok: The second objective of the event is that we hope to help strengthen c d
family bonds and relationships through using fun gadgets and playing
video games.
Tiffany: Hmm, I understand how playing video games could improve family
relationships, but fun gadgets? Do you mean we could use fun gadgets
in ways that help improve family relationships?
Mr. Kwok: Yes. Fun gadgets like a painting tablet. We’ll demonstrate how the
whole family could use it for fun purposes.
Tiffany: I can’t wait to try it.
Mr. Kwok: e I’m sure you will like it. The last objective is very important; it’s not
about fun but security. We hope that through the exhibitions and

demonstrations, visitors will learn about cybercrimes and Internet

security.
Tiffany: Oh yes, Internet security is very important as so many activities are
conducted online such as shopping and banking.
Mr. Kwok: And cybercrimes … we want people to learn more about them so that
they are more alert and cautious.
Tiffany: Well, this is the price to pay living in the modern world of Internet and
technologies! There are always bad people out there taking advantage
of these modern conveniences, and that causes us more things to worry
about.
Mr. Kwok: Well … that’s life!
Tiffany: Thanks very much again Mr. Kwok for telling us about the event.
Mr. Kwok: My pleasure!

Listen to Michael and Helen’s conversation about the recently updated
layout for the Teen Science Network web page. Fill in the missing
information on the web page below.
Helen: Michael, have you got the latest web page design?
Michael: Yes, I have got a copy here. It’s simple and seems easy to navigate! I
like it. What about you?
Helen: Oh yes, I think this is a more user-friendly design than the old one.
Now, what we need to do is to tell the IT team what information and
links to put on the page.
Michael: Okay, let’s do that now so the IT team can get the page done by the end
of the week. Have you got the info?
Helen: Yes. One second please … right … let’s start with navigation boxes.
a b They are the same as the old ones … so on the top row, there are three
boxes, the left one is the ‘Home’ box, the middle box is for ‘Inventions
and innovations’, the one on the right is called ‘Scientific discovery’.
Michael: Right … ‘Inventions and innovations’ … and the one on the right side
is ‘Scientific discovery’. Helen, you know, I often think that
inventions, innovations and scientific discovery all mean the same.
Helen: Well, a lot of people think that but they are different.
Michael: Perhaps I should click into these links more often.
Helen: c Well, there’s lots of interesting information there … anyway … here’s
the second row of the navigation boxes … the one on the left is for
‘Upcoming events’ and the middle box is ‘Gadget corner’.
Michael: ‘Gadget corner’ … you know Helen, this ‘Gadget corner’ is the most
visited link on our web page.
Helen: I’m not surprised! People like gadgets, and they want to know what’s
available and the gadget reviews. Anyway, here is the last box of the
navigation section — it’s called ‘Network info’. Now, the heading is
the same but we want a couple of new links in it.
Michael: Okay … what are the new links? f g
Helen: There are two new links. One is a link to our ‘E-shop’ and the other
one is ‘Social media’.
Michael: Right … ‘E-shop’ and ‘Social media’.
Helen: Michael, let’s put ‘Social media’ after ‘FAQ’.
Michael: Okay … that means ‘E-shop’ is the last one on the scroll-down menu.
Helen: Yes.

Michael: Done.
Helen: Right … here is the section that briefly introduces our Teen Science
Network … it pops up when visitors open our page.
Michael: I like this idea to let people know that we’re not just a local,
not-for-profit network, but also a network run by teenagers.
Helen: d e And we also organise educational science programmes and various
activities to promote STEM.
Michael: Right … organising educational science programmes and various
activities to promote STEM. So, do you know what is the next
educational science programme or activity we are going to organise?
Helen: I think it’s an activity called ‘Solar Cooker’. Participants will learn to
build a cooker which uses solar energy.
Michael: That will be fun.
Helen: Yes, and practical. By the way, please remember ‘STEM’ is in capital
letters.
Michael: Oh … that’s right.
Helen: The bottom half of the page is for blog post links … and I have three
new blog posts for the new page.
Michael: By the way, who writes the blogs?
Helen: Our blogs are written by science teachers and scientists working in tech
companies, and that’s why the topics are always interesting and
relevant to our everyday life.
Michael: h Well, I think I should read them more often! So, what are the three new
blog posts?
Helen: The first one is titled ‘The hidden dangers of free public Wi-Fi’.
Michael: i The hidden dangers of free public Wi-Fi … so, it must be about the
risks associated with the convenience.
Helen: Exactly … while free public Wi-Fi offers people convenience, there are
risks of using it.
Michael: That’s why I don’t often use these free public Wi-Fi networks. They
lack strong security protection, which makes it easy for hackers to
capture passwords and gain access to your personal information.
Helen: Me neither … anyway, back to the new blog posts, the second one is
about data storage.
Michael: Is it about the history of data storage?
Helen: j No, it’s about the future of data storage. I’ve had a quick glance at the
blog entry, it talks about some likely data storage means such as helium
hard drives and DNA digital storage.

Michael: Sorry, did you say, DNA digital storage?

Helen: Yes, using DNA to store data, not human DNA though, it’s artificial
DNA.
Michael: Well, I definitely need to read it, sounds very interesting!
Helen: k It is! The last post is a science teacher’s recent experience in an
electrical appliances upcycling workshop.
Michael: An electrical appliances upcycling workshop … sounds fascinating!
There’re so many old, unused or discarded electrical appliances around
in Hong Kong. How wonderful it will be if we could upcycle them, and
make something nice and practical.
Helen: l Yes, the teacher said that he was amazed by the imaginations and
creativity of the participants in the workshop.
Michael: Are there any photos on his post?
Helen: Yes, quite a few. Amazing! With imaginations and creativity, we can
give these old electrical appliances a new life.
Michael: That’s right!
