CHANDIGARH UNIVERSITY.

Gharuan Mohali

Institute/Department: Chemical Engineering

Subject Name: Fluid and Particle Mechanics
Subject Code: 22CHT-203

Assignment No.: 2
Maxi Marks: 10

Course Outcome

CO1 Illustrate the concept of fluid flow in industry

CO2 Report the practical importance of fluid flow in process industry.
CO3 Analyses equations for calculating pressure drop for flowing fluids in pipelines
CO4 Extend a bridge between theoretical and practical principle in fluid flow
CO5 Estimate the boundary layer flow behavior of fluids.

Sr. No. Question CO

Number
1. An orifice meter is used to measure the flow rate of water flowing in a pipe line of CO4
78 mm ID. The orifice diameter is 15 mm. Mercury manometer reads 18 cm. The
volumetric flow rate in this case is 719 cm3/s. (i) Calculate the coefficient of
discharge of the meter. (ii) If the pressure drop is decreased to 9 cm of Hg, what will
be the flow rate?

2. Determine the height of a rectangular weir of length 6 m to be built across a

rectangular channel. The maximum depth of water on upstream side of the weir is CO4
1.8 m and discharge is 2000 litres/s. Take Cd = 0.6 and neglect end contractions.

3 A 20 cm x 10 cm venturi meter is inserted in a vertical pipe carrying oil of sp. gr.0

the flows of oil is in upward direction. The difference of levels between the throat CO4
and inlet section is 50 cm. The oil mercury differential manometer gives a reading
of 30 cm of mercury. Find the discharge of oil. Neglect losses.

4 A venturi meter is to be installed in a 100 mm diameter line to measure the flow of CO4
water. The maximum flow is expected to be 73.8 m3 /h. The mercury is to be used
as a manometric fluid and the corresponding manometer reading is 1.27 m of
mercury. Find the throat diameter required for the venturi and the power that would
be required to operate the meter at the full load if the permanent loss in pressure is
10% of the venturi differential (i.e., pressure drop across the meter). Data : Density
of water = 1000 kg/m3 , Density of mercury = 13600 kg/m3 , Coefficient of venturi
meter = 0.98
