CASE AS A RESEARCH STRATEGY

BUILDING THEORY – ENHANCING CONTRIBUTION

Dr. Ajoy K Dey

McManus, S. E. (2007).

3 WHAT IS NOT THEORY
• Sutton, R. I., & Staw, B. M. (1995). What theory is not. Administrative science quarterly, Sept 1, 371-384.

• References are not theory

• Data are not theory
• Lists of Variables or Constructs are Not Theory
• Diagrams are Not Theory
• Hypothesis (or predictions) are not theory
• Identifying Strong Theory
• A theory is a statement of what causes what, and why
• A theory is built upon a sound classification scheme, it can explain what causes what, and why, and
under what circumstances.
• Theory must answer “why?”
• It's about connections among phenomena. It delves into underlying processes

6 SAMPLE FOR QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

• “Talking Pig”: Siggelkow, N. (2007). Persuasion with case

studies. Academy of management journal, 50(1), 20-24.
• If it is a unique phenomenon, even a single case can be
powerful
• Sampling technique should always be purposive
• Respondents must have experiences of the phenomenon
• Primary data must be taken. These can be supported by
secondary data.
• Data must be collected from more than one sources

Dr. Ajoy K Dey

7 SAMPLE FOR QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

• Phineas Gage: The man with a hole in his head

(BBC March 6, 2011 - https://www.bbc.com/news/health-12649555)
• To clear rocks for railway lines; used to drill hole in big rocks, put gunpowder and
tamp down with an iron rod to the middle; on 13 September 1848 the iron rod
apparently scraped the side of the rock, creating a spark which set off the
gunpowder early; the rod - about 1m long and 3cm in diameter – pierced his skull,
landing some 30m away
• Phineas survived and lived for another 12 years un medical care
• This single case became most famous case studies in brain science to this day.

Dr. Ajoy K Dey

8 THEORY BUILDING WITH SINGLE CASE STUDY
• Common reasons that reviewers and editors reject research articles
• Does not match the scope
• Lack of clear theoretical contribution
• Scholars might enhance the power of their research if they narrowed their focus to study
phenomena within the boundaries of a real-world context – Case study approach
• For studying a phenomenon a unique context can be carefully selected so that
theoretical limits are found beyond which the existing theory fails to explain the
phenomenon
• This is an opportunity for a researcher to generate new understanding by studying the
phenomenon beyond the limit
• Workplace bullying of neurodiverse employees – in three countries
• Empowerment of marginalized women

9 A NEED TO UPSKILL
• Most of us are adept at conducting quantitative studies

• But to adopt the case method as a research strategy, we need to understand the following issues:
• Understand how to formulate the “what”, “how” and “why” research questions that are critical to
qualitative inquiry.
• Distinguish between deductive and inductive approaches
• Difference between theoretical anchoring (What we know?) and literature review (What we do not
know?)
• Develop expertise at collecting data by conducting in-depth interviews and scanning secondary sources.
• Familiarize with Gioia's method of data visualization, which can be used to draw out themes from data.
• Learn Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis or any other analysis method
• Learn to build a theory through single case or multi-case studies, as well as to conceptualize a process
model to explain how phenomena emerge, develop, change, and terminate over time.
