ASSIGNMENT 2

1. Conceptual Design/Sketch: Develop a conceptual design or sketch for a rainwater

harvesting system tailored to the College of Engineering building and MINEC.

Conceptual Design
The first activity focuses on the conceptual design of rainwater harvesting systems
for the College of Engineering (COE) and MinEC buildings. The first and third images show
the bare structures of the COE and Mindanao Engineering Center (MinEC), which serve as
references for the concept designs presented in the second and fourth images. These
designs detail systems for collecting, storing, and utilizing rainwater to reduce dependence
on external water sources. The sketches emphasize efficient water collection and storage,
ensuring sustainable usage for non-potable purposes such as irrigation, toilet flushing, and
maintenance.

Designing a rainwater harvesting system for the Engineering Center is a practical

and sustainable approach to improving water resource management. One key reason for its
implementation is the potential to reduce reliance on external water supplies, particularly
given the large roof area, which is ideal for capturing significant amounts of rainwater in a
region like Bukidnon, known for regular rainfall. Additionally, the system aligns with the
university's sustainability goals by promoting environmental responsibility. It enhances the
efficient use of natural resources, reduces stormwater runoff, and lessens the burden on
local water infrastructure. Furthermore, it serves as a model of sustainable engineering for
students, providing hands-on learning opportunities and supporting the university’s broader
mission of resource conservation.

2. Green Building Design: Create a comprehensive green building concept for both
the College of Engineering building and MINEC, incorporating sustainable practices
and energy-efficient solutions.

The second initiative focuses on the development of green building designs for the
COE and MinEC buildings. These designs aim to incorporate sustainable features such as
solar panels, natural lighting, and energy-efficient HVAC systems to reduce energy
consumption and minimize environmental impact. The current buildings serve as references
for the transformation into eco-friendly structures, with the designs highlighting renewable
energy and energy-efficient technologies to promote sustainability across the campus. The
rooftop designs showcase an extensive green roof with grass, mosses, and other low-
maintenance plants, which are cost-effective and absorb less heat than larger plants. The
building’s vibrant exterior color also helps reflect sunlight, reducing heat absorption inside
the structure.

Developing green buildings in school environments is crucial for both practical and
educational reasons. Green buildings significantly reduce energy consumption, water use,
and waste, helping schools lower operational costs. By integrating energy-efficient systems,
renewable energy sources, and sustainable materials, schools can minimize their
environmental impact. Additionally, green buildings create healthier, more comfortable
indoor environments that enhance the well-being and productivity of students and staff.
Moreover, these buildings serve as educational tools, allowing students to observe
sustainable technologies in action and inspiring future generations of engineers, architects,
and environmental scientists. This demonstrates the school’s commitment to environmental
stewardship and provides a real-world example of addressing global challenges like climate
change and resource conservation.
