SUB STRAND 3.3 LAUNDERING COTTON ITEM

Specific learning outcomes
By the end of the sub-strand the learner should be able to:
a) Describe how to launder a cotton item
b) Launder a cotton item for personal hygiene
c) Appreciate the importance of laundry work for hygiene
purposes.
In this sub-strand, we will learn how to clean cotton items.
What are cotton items?
Cotton items are clothes and wear that are made using cotton
fabric.
Tap the empty squares below to observe images of some of the
items that are made of cotton.

Most of our school uniforms are made using cotton fabric.

Have you ever cleaned cotton items before?
(Yes or No)
We will conduct an activity to clean a cotton shirt.
Tap the images below to learn the materials that are needed for
this activity.
(Images of the following items. When tapped reveal their
names)
o A white cotton shirt
o Clean cold water
o Clean hot water
o Detergent
o An iron box
o An ironing surface
o Basins
o Pegs
o Hunger.
Tap the empty rectangles below to learn the steps to follow, for
this activity.
1. Shake the shirt to remove loose dirt
2. Fill one basin with clean cold water and another with clean
hot water.
3. Place the white cotton shirt in the basin with cold water.
This helps to loosen any dirt.
4. Take the shirt out of the cold water, squeeze out excess
water, and apply detergent to the areas with stains or dirt
(e.g., collar, cuffs).
5. Dip the shirt in the basin with hot water, scrubbing it
gently to remove all dirt. Focus on any stained areas until
they appear clean.
6. Rinse the shirt in cold water to remove all detergent.
Repeat, if necessary, until the water runs clear.
7. Squeeze the shirt gently to remove excess water, but
avoid twisting to prevent damage.
8. Use pegs to hang the shirt on a line in a sunny, airy place.
Allow it to dry completely.
9. Once dry, place the shirt on a flat ironing surface. Set the
iron box to the cotton setting, which usually applies a
higher heat.
10. Iron the shirt carefully to remove wrinkles, moving
from one section to another.
11. Once ironed, fold or hang the shirt neatly for storage
or wear.
Grade 5 learners wrote down the safety measures to observe
while laundering a white cotton shirt.
Tap the flashcards below to reveal the safety measures.
(interactive flashcards)
o Always use clean water to wash
o Check the care label symbols on the shirts before you start
the laundry
o Do not mix white clothes with fast and loose-coloured
clothes
o Follow the correct procedure to prevent damaging the
white clothes
o Switch off the iron box after use.

When laundering a fast-coloured cotton shirt (a shirt with

colours that won’t bleed or fade easily), follow these steps to
ensure the colours stay vibrant:
Steps to Launder a Fast-Coloured Cotton Shirt
1. Separate the fast-coloured shirt from whites and lighter-
coloured clothing to prevent any colour transfer.
2. Fill a basin with clean, cold water. Cold water helps
maintain colour and prevents any slight fading.
3. Use a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid using harsh
or bleaching agents, as these can fade colours.
4. Soak the shirt in cold water for about 5-10 minutes to
loosen any dirt. Avoid soaking for too long, as this may
affect the colour.
5. Swirl the shirt gently in the water and lightly rub any
stained areas. Avoid scrubbing too hard to protect the
colour.
6. Drain the soapy water and rinse the shirt in clean, cold
water until no detergent remains.
7. Press out excess water gently, but do not twist or wring
too tightly, as this can cause fabric damage or distort the
shape.
8. Hang the shirt in a shaded, airy place using pegs. Avoid
direct sunlight, as it can fade colours over time.
9. Once dry, iron the shirt on a low or medium heat setting,
suitable for cotton. Use a pressing cloth to protect the
colour from direct heat.
