1. DESCRIPTION
The machine described in this manual is used for Marshall Test. It consists of a rigid 2-column
structure with a mobile upper cross-mean and lower cabinet with mechanical trust group, as
well as the electric and electronic components.
LCD Panel is mounted on the front of the cabinet. The machine is supplied with displacement
transducer indicating the position of the ram and also with load cell for reading of the
supplied load during the tests.
2. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Test Speed : 50.8 mm/min
Max Load : 50 kN
Weight : 90 kg
3. INSTALLATION
Bearing in mind the weight of the machine and electronics it contains, the machine should
be used indoors and free from dust and high humidity.
The machine should be lifted via the eyebolt attached to the upper cross-beam (ensure that
the eyebolt is screwed into the cross-beam before lifting).
ATTENTION: Ensure that the bench is strong enough to support the weight of the
machine. The recommended bench height is 70 – 80 cm.
4. SAFETY STANDARDS
It is important that the operator has read and fully understood the safety aspects. Use of
other purposes beside Marshall tests will be considered improper and ALFA will not be
responsible for any damage to persons or the machine.
2/7
ATTENTION: Danger to operator due to the fact that it is an automatic machine.
Do not place hands while the test is running. The load applied should
be along the vertical axis
6. TEST PROCEDURE
a) Connect the machine to electricity source and turn it on from the Red Power button
at the front panel.
b) Select [MARSHALL] from the LCD control.
c) After placing the sample in the correct place in the machine, select the unit by
navigating up and down through the controller, then select the desired unit by pressing
[ENTER].
3/7
d) After finishing all the installation, press [START] from the LCD control. The test will
start and will automatically draw the graph for the Marshall Test in terms of load
versus flow. The machine will automatically stop upon finishing the test.
7. CALIBRATION
a) To reach the calibration, select [SETTINGS] from the main menu in the LCD control.
b) Select [CALIBRATION] from the Settings menu and enter the password provided by the
laboratory coordinator. If you do not have the password, please contact ALFA to obtain
it via phone or email.
4/7
c) The machine can be calibrated via two methods, Load Cell Calibration and Flow
Meter Calibration.
5/7
d) Press [START] to start performing the calibration. On zero load, press [ENTER] button.
“OK” message will be shown on the LCD. Press [ENTER] again when the load is close
to the maximum value. Enter the value of the reference load cell in 4-digit format. If
required, press [BACK] to re-enter the value, then press [ENTER] to finish the
calibration.
6/7
d) The second step is to adjust the transducer to +25 mm from the zero location with the
help of a vernier caliper/compass and pressing [ENTER] button again from the LCD
Control.
8. MAINTENANCE
After each 200 – 250 tests or every six months, grease the ram screw threaded with 46MR401
or equivalent grease by following the steps below:
a) While doing this, the machine should be switched off and the cables should be
disconnected.
b) Remove the cover from the ram thread by unscrewing the bolts.
c) After the greasing process, tighten the rubber cover and connect the machine to the
electricity again.
9. PROBLEMS
a) The machine does not switch on?
- - Check the mail cables and the power supply.
- - Check the fuse; if burnt, replace it with an equivalent one.
b) The ram movement is noisy?
- Check the two columns; if loosened, they should be tightened back in
clockwise direction.
- Check the screws of the ram plate; if loosened, they should be tightened.
