Review of Lean On Me
It is based on the
real-life story of a man who turned around a school in New Jersey.
In the film, Mr. Clark was moved against his own will from the school he was a teacher at to a
kindergarten where he spent 20 years. Twenty years later the eastside high school had
deteriorated because of the drug abuse as well as crime that had become popular in the school.
The students couldn’t pass a basic skills test and the state threatened to take over the school's
administration.
The mayor didn’t want this to happen so he consulted with the school superintendent who
suggested that they hire Joe Clark as the school principal.
Joe Clark starts by expelling 300 students who were doing crack, graffiti, smoking drugs, etc.
That was one of his first reforms followed by, the tutorials organized for the students so they
could pass the basic skills test, locking the doors to protect the students, moving the staff
positions for the benefit of the students, and encouraging school spirit by making them learn and
sing the school’s songs.
There are many inspiring characters in the movie Lean on Me, starting with the main character;
Joe Louis Clark as well as Sams, Ms. Levias, and Tina Sachetti.
Joe Clark although unorthodox as he uses unconventional methods to turn the school around, is a
principled, passionate, and resilient man. It may look like his methods were harsh but it was out
of love for the students and his desire to see them succeed, he once to Sams a troubled student
and former gang member “I care about you. That’s why I’m hard on you. Mr. Clark embodies
effective leadership.
Sams is a student who tried to fit into the gangster lifestyle, although to me his tough guy
demeanor was very see-through. He gets expelled and comes to the school and Mr. Clark has
sympathy for him and allows him back into the school. He still faces pressure from his gang to
be involved in their activities. Sams goes through a lot of character development in the movie
and seen at the end of the film graduating.
Ms. Levias who is a dedicated and compassionate teacher at Eastside High School can be seen as
Mr. Clark’s closest ally among the teachers. She is selfless as she puts the needs of her students
before her own, and she is patient with her students. She is a mentor to Tina, she guides and
supports Tina helping her overcome personal troubles, and she contributes greatly to Tina’s
transformation and success.
Tina Sachetti is a very vulnerable character in Lean on Me, she is a single mother and a student.
She faces personal struggles but she still makes it and she even inspires Clark’s reforms.
Lessons learned
• Clark's action to expel the bad students shows that the bad eggs and the good eggs should
be separated in order to prevent the bad students from having effects on the bad ones.
• We should learn to follow the rules even when we doing an action for the right cause. The
reason why the doors were chained was to protect the students however it was against the
code of conduct and Mr. Clark got arrested.
• We should try not to follow the crowd and be ourselves we learn that from Sams's
experience. We can also learn from Sams that coming out of gangsterism can be difficult.
Although the movie was made in 1989 which was thirty-five years ago it is still seen as an iconic
movie that still relates to the problems of nowadays. It still highlights the struggles of students,
leadership qualities, and many lessons we can still learn.
