EXPRESSION FIBER ARTS
Expression Fiber Arts

-Sainte Terrer-

“Sainte-Terrer” is the word from which “saunter” is derived. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s lecture “Walking” in
which Thoreau describes walking, or sauntering, through nature as a kind of spiritual experience.

To explore themes of self-re ection and exploration, I designed this rectangular shawl to draw in elements of nature: a
seed stitch border, simple vertical openwork to represent wind blowing through the grass, all surrounded by panels of
lacy leaves. As you saunter through this project, I hope you take a moment to enjoy and be inspired by the nature
around you.

- PATTERN-
NOTES

• The Buttery Sport sample shown used approximately 968 yds/885 m total: Color A) 574 yds/525
m and Color B) 394 yds/360 m.
• The Limited Edition All Good Things Fingering sample shown used approximately 1151 yds/1052
m total.
• This piece is knit at. You will turn your work after you complete each row.
• Slipped stitches are worked both knitwise and purlwise in this pattern. Pay attention to the
stitches as identi ed to ensure you are slipping in the appropriate direction.
• As it can be challenging to x mistakes or dropped stitches in lace patterns, you may wish to
utilize lifelines as you work through this project.
• Click here to watch a video showing how to work the special stitches featured in this pattern.

Intarsia Version Speci c Notes:

• The center section is noted in a bold font to help differentiate between the sections.
• This piece uses the intarsia technique to join additional colors to your work without carrying
oats. Three stitch types are incorporated: seed stitch for borders, lace leaves (left and right
columns), and vertical openwork (middle column).
• Knitting intarsia in this pattern requires you to utilize three to four balls of yarn (two of Color B
and one of Color A) at the same time.
• As this pattern requires you to utilize multiple balls of yarn at once, I’ve included some tips for
yarn management. Using a project bag or other vessel that can hold three balls of yarn side by
side, arrange your yarn per the diagram below. As you knit across the rows, the yarn will be
aligned exactly how you need them. As you turn your work, turn your yarn vessel in the same
direction to keep the yarn strands from getting tangled.

B A B

• You should alternate skeins of yarn to avoid any noticeable lines or demarcations that can appear
when using hand-dyed yarn. For this pattern, you will use one skein of Color B for Column 1, two
skeins of Color A for Column 2, and one skein of Color B for Column 3. For easier yarn
management, work Column 2 with one skein of Color A for about a third of the shawl, and then
start alternating in a new skein of yarn every other row. You will then be managing four balls of
yarn until the rst ball of Color A is exhausted.

fi
fl
fi

• You will change colors twice in each row. To prevent gaps as you work through the color changes,
twist the new yarn strand over the one you just dropped, so the yarn in the preceding column
gets trapped. (If you have done colorwork, it is similar to trapping a oat.)
• After knitting the initial border, you must break Color A in order to reset where you will start
knitting in that color again.
• When you reach the end of the body of the shawl, you will break all colors, and then pick up
Color A to complete the nal border.
• Because this pattern utilizes a signi cant amount of Color A, you could choose to knit the borders
in Color B, or knit one border in Color A and the other in Color B.

GAUGE SWATCH

Knit the gauge swatch in the Vertical Openwork pattern (middle column) to get a more accurate
representation of how your project will knit up size-wise. Use Color B to knit your gauge swatch
because this pattern uses up nearly the entirety of Color A.

Vertical Openwork (multiples of 5 + 1)

R1 (RS): K1, (k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpo) across.
R2 (WS): P across.

Knit in pattern and wet block, so you can measure stitch and row counts across a 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10
cm) square. Be sure to check your yarn for colorfastness.

FINISHING

Wet blocking is highly recommended for best results. Soak your shawl in tepid water for 20-30
minutes, and then press out excess moisture. With blocking wires if you have them and pins/combs
(or pins/combs only), start pinning the shawl into shape, beginning with one of the border edges.
Lace stitches bene t from more aggressive blocking, since you really need to stretch the fabric as
you block to open the lace up.
